One of my favorite games of all time. I have the great pleasure to sit in the student section at this game amongst over confident tatterdiggers. Through the first half we were pelted with ice, popcorn and other crap. We continued to chant and cheer which made it worse. Me and my buddies were undeterred. But as the crowd thinned, due to the ass whippin the Vols laid on the worthless tiders, we were left alone to enjoy the growing empty stadium. Eventually we walked around the stadium to the Tennessee section and spent the last quarter owning the stadium. Sweet victory! Nothing better than hearing the wailing of the toothless taterdiggers! Its been a while but we will hear it soon. Wailing and gnashing of teeth will ensue and you all will remember why the 3rd Saturday in October is still on our schedule and why this is our most hated rival. GBO

Thirty plus years in the future, wonder what today's TVs will look like. Don't know how we survived without first downs indicated in yellow.
Thanks for sharing.

Good long time friend/mentor of mine sat as a guest in the Governor's box at Legion that day. Which was a small group of chair-backs on the 50 yard line. At the request of his host he wore neutral colors and was subdued for the whole game...until Johnny went for six. He got up smack dab right in the middle of the box and bellowed "GOOOOOOOO BIIIIIIIGG OOOORRRANGE!!!" Wallace turned to him and said "Son we don't do "dat hehre"..True story..Cracks me up every-time I see the Johnnie run

Johnny Jones was an incredible back. Unbelievable balance. He was like a weeble. He would wobble but not fall down. Sad that he blew out his knee.

I was working in PA, I called my mom and asked her to turn the radio on to John Ward and put the phone beside the radio. Listened to the whole game that way.

OP,

I remember listening to that game as a young 11 year old. My Dad's company was having a picnic at Lenoir City park and we had the visual created for us John Ward. I can still hear the touchdown run.

Johnnie Jones is one of my all time favorites. Had a beer with him and Carl Zander right after they kicked bama's ass on the hill in 1984. Good times!

Johnnie was a highly underrated back. He would be effective in today's offense. I loved hearing John Ward say Jonathan Jones of Mummmffoord, Tennessee.

Lots of people talk about Chuck Webb, Cobb, Lewis, but Johnnie is my all time favorite.

Living in Chicago, I did the very same, call home and get my mom to lay the phone down beside the radio so I could listen to John Ward......no social media or computers back then, just the newspaper
