Averaged less than 2 yards on 28 of 29 1st-down plays.

Just a couple weeks ago, Butch Jones touted his ninth-ranked Tennessee team’s opening game --- and all openers --- as the “game of unknowns.” Around that same time, Jones also had remarked about how first down remained the only true “mystery” down in football.

Well, that first-down mystery proved an insoluble riddle for Tennessee in its narrow, 20-13 overtime win in its lid-lifter against Appalachian State.

...Aside from the game-turning 67-yard first-down touchdown pass from Joshua Dobbs to Josh Malone in the fourth quarter, the Vols for the game, including overtime, tallied approximately 52 yards on 28 first-down plays --- including gaining back five yards after a first-down false start penalty.

First-down-for-little: Vols struggle on 'mystery' down

UT's 1st-down pass plays
1-10 T18 #11 to #25: incomplete
1-10 T49 #11 to #25: incomplete
1-10 T33 #11 to #3: 67 yards (TD)
1-10 A22 #11 to #3: incomplete
1-10 T25 #11 to #6: 3 yards
1-10 T24 #11 to #6: incomplete
1-10 T27 #11 to #7: 5 yards
1-10 A25 #11 to #82: 11 yards
1-10 T43 #11 to #: sack
1-10 T40 #11 to #: sack

App state defense was great. That's a great team, 85 Bears like front 7!

This stat is just so bad. Just bad. Butch and Debord need to get their acts together. That is unexcusable.

I heard on one of the local radio shows last night that App State's strength on defense is stopping the run. They held Clemson down all game long running wise last season as well. The difference being that Clemson had Watson to go out and throw the ball around. The running game will look muuuuuch better this week against VA tech, especially if we'll cut Dobbs loose to run more.

My two offensive keys to winning any football game:

1. Positive yards on first down (so you don't get yourself in a hole on 2nd & 3rd Downs)
2. First Downs, not Touchdowns (grind it out, keep the ball away from the other team)

How many times did we run for less than 3 yds on 1st down? It seemed like alot while watching the game.

As the commentators pointed out a FIFTY POUND advantage of our o line. This is what scares me most. I can understand vanilla play calling. But I would have expected the line to be able to at least hold if not even get a push.
Wth is going on with the line coaching?

The box was stacked 90% of the game. Regardless of weight advantage, we only have five O-linemen on the field.

It's on the coaches to adjust to a stacked box. They did not.

These stats and everything else we did is what predictably will buy you

Simply not true.

Appy didn't have to stack the box as their DL were able to beat our OL straight up. Also, most of the time we keep the tight end in to block so that's 6 OL not 5.

Fair point on the TE.

But just so we're clear..... you feel they weren't stacking the box all game?

This is some BS. They took away the 62 yard pass to say that we only had 53 yards on first down? But with the pass we have 115 yards, accounting for 1/3 of our total offense. This means that the first down yardage accounts for what it should for the game.

For what it's worth, if you take away the 62 yard pass from the point total we lose. So what other statistic are we going to withhold to make the team seem like it underperforming in other areas?

On another note, most of the time we ran it up he middle on first down with Hurd, which I'm pretty sure he was over utilized to keep from using the more of the play book.

Bogus article.

So throw in our futility on the ground with Hurd, for the most part, and that is about as bad as it gets on first down. The Vols HAVE to complete passes on first to keep the defense honest and open the running game.

We ran the ball almost every first down! They knew what was coming and we still won. Get over it. We will see how well we can mix it up on the offense when we play VT this Saturday.

We must throw more on 1st down. We may run the ball 60% of the time overall but 1st down should be closer to 50/50 run/pass than any other down.

If we can't throw on 1st down then our passing game is broken.
