Despite marked inconsistencies and lethargic offensive starts in two of their first three games, No. 12/14 Tennessee (3-0) doesn’t feel like the fourth-quarter woes that plagued the Vols a year ago remain an issue this season.

Not with the Vols’ offseason focus on finding the missing 25 points from their last five losses, and not with a more veteran team that hosts No. 16/19 Florida (3-0, 1-0) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (CBS).

“I think everybody knows the magnitude of this game, but that’s why you play college football; for games like this,” Kendal Vickers said. “We’re all excited and ready to get after it.”

Despite injuries to a number of key players on both sides of the ball, including defensive starters Cam Sutton, Darrin Kirkland Jr. and LaTroy Lewis, the Vols presented a calm confidence Tuesday in players’ final interactions this week with media.

“I mean, we just have the next-man-up mentality,” sophomore defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie said. “Every guy in there is just stepping up playing their role. Everybody who’s injured is still a big part of our defense, mentor to the guy behind them, knows what they’re doing. All that type of stuff. I think that’s kind of the cool thing about our defense; we don’t really have like one Alpha male. We just have a whole defense of Alpha males. So you know, we’re all out there, all out there ready to go. Every guy’s ready to lead.”

Vickers professed the Vols’ belief in one another and quickly dismissed any notion that Florida’s offensive line, or really any group for any team, would intimidate the Tennessee defense.

“We got a bunch of confident guys on our team,” said Vickers. “I don’t think there’s any mental edge anywhere. I think we’ve just got to go out and execute. ...

“We don’t get intimidated. That’s … the D-line, we know what we can do and we don’t let anybody intimidate us.”
