Vols Trivia

the straw that broke the camel's back was the preseason game that year at the Astrodome where they found rips in the turf and the team(s) were concerned that it could cause serious injury if a player tripped on it and the game was cancelled.

Well right yeah. The city not wanting to pay for a new stadium (while the city was dealing with 1980s oil fallout in its economy still) did it too.

I'm just still confused why the League cleared a game to be played in Knoxville if they (& the owner) didn't know the team was moving there until the end of that year

there's a history of teams playing in cities other than their home city. My father still has a ticket stub from the 60s when the Bears came to Nashville and played a preseason game. Some years back the Cardinals and the 49ers (I believe) played a preseason game in Mexico City. It happens sometimes.

Another reason they could move game is to keep in mind that the preseason games are big bucks to the owners. Its something on how the money is distributed and in preseason, the owners get a huge chunk.

Also keep in mind that at the time while the public had no clue that the Oilers would leave, Shuler was playing for the Skins so taking the game to Neyland would be financial boom for both teams. Heck, I went because it was the NFL and Heath in Knoxville.

The Eagles and Redskins played at Bristol International Speedway in early 60's. There was a very small crowd.

What year did Smoky become UT's mascot?

Bonus question - how was he picked?

Smokey - at least the idea of smokey - was initially selected as a mascot by a student poll in 1953; the Pep Club held a contest for him, they desired to find a coon hound native to Tennessee to use

During halftime of the Miss St game said contest was held with several dogs introduced for voting. Rev. Bill Brooks' dog "Blue Smokey" was the introduced last and the dog howled loudly when introduced. The students cheered to this and chose this dog to become Smokey and be the UT mascot

When was the last time UT recorded back to back shutouts in games? And who were the opponents?

When did Randy Sanders call his first game as the OC at UT?

Bonus: Who scored the first TD under his system(in that game)?
