Vols Trivia

Bama loss in 1975 knocked them out and they were not ranked again by AP until they beat Auburn in 1985..

I need to correct this statement. it is wrong.

I over looked rankings in 1979. things like this happen when one ages :)

Ole Miss loss on Nov 17th 1979 knocked them out of rankings and they were not ranked again until 1985 win over Auburn.

apologize for mistake

Did you attend the game?

I'd like to know if there was more Skins fans than Oiler fans

Honestly...it was a preseason game. I doubt there was really too much of a major team attendance either way to begin with

I was at the game. From what I remember, it was overwhelming Skin fans at the time. Shuler was a fresh hero; and the Oilers weren't the Titans yet, nor had they played a game in Nashville yet.

Also, to add onto what TrueOrange said, all the Skins fans were just Vol fans wanting to see Shuler. There were alot of Red & Yellow though, only outnumbered by the beautiful sea of orange.

that's what i figured. I was too young at the time, but it seemed the numbers would pretty much be (in order) 1) Shuler vol fans (orange), 2)Skins fans; but yeah more Vol/Shuler fans really than anything else

I wonder why the Oilers were playing a pre-season game there though. The decision to move the Oilers to TN didn't come until the end of the 1995 season; this game was well before that (at least that August) - makes me curious why the league would put a game there

I was at that game. I was young and really excited to see Shuler. A friend and I were discussing it the other day, and we both remember being disappointed that Shuler didn't run through the T set up in his honor for the game...

Redskins Vs. Oilers (Oilers were transferring to Nashville and Redskins featured hot-shot QB Heath Shuler)

oddly though, that hadn't been announced to the league nor the public yet (if it had even been decided by Houston franchise and/or Bud Adams at that point). Makes me wonder what the premise of the game being played there was then

Interesting, just started researching that. Earliest I can see is around November '95. I never even thought of the game being there until you just brought it up. Good catch.

the straw that broke the camel's back was the preseason game that year at the Astrodome where they found rips in the turf and the team(s) were concerned that it could cause serious injury if a player tripped on it and the game was cancelled.

I know; weird huh. Especially since the game was cleared by the league to be in Knoxville but it wasn't decided that the oilers would move to TN until the end of that year
