Vols trending Down (247 article)

Insider source sounds a lot like a disgruntled assistant who sees the writing on the wall as to their employment status next year and wants to burn the house down on the way out. A number of assistants could fit this description

And a player that quit when he could have helped the team.

They do have an agenda. They don't want the football team to ever be successful because if it was - they would have absolutely nothing to write or complain about.

Turmoil sells papers and clicks - consistency and good things do not.

Absolutely false. Readership and subscriptions to sites like 247 go WAY up when a program is successful.

Some of you should take off until August. Never seen such crybaby group of fans that enjoy coaching changes every other year. Go out and do something productive.

Please list the posters and their posts verifying that they have called for coaching changes every other year.

Yeah, I'm sure people were canceling their paper subscriptions in the 90's because UT was consistently winning.

Travis didn't have one "insider source," he had about 8. I don't believe any of the people he spoke to are full-time coaches.

Why release it now? Sounds like who ever is behind this wants to impact recruiting to ensure next season is a failure.

Why not give the time for the Coach and the incoming AD to evaluate things rather than blasting the entire program right in the middle of prime recruiting time?

The media and part of the support / fan base surrounding UT do more harm to the program than any coach has ever done.

This all truly makes me want to hide the fact that I am a fan for fear of being classified as one of the whiny idiots.

Yes, he is obviously trying to destroy recruiting and unsure that he has an impact on UT being a failure next year.

The 3rd paragraph is hilarious.

Go with it.

The article actually plays into CBJs favor.
Issues in accountability in the weight room? Bring in a new overall head from the NFL whatever he may cost.

Issues among the defensive staff? Let Shoop clean house, regardless of the cost.

Seems like CBJ needs to find these unnamed sources and fire them first.

I am not saying anything is untrue, but media does seem to have agenda in Knoxville.

I am sure CBJ has not helped his own situation with the way he deals with the media.

actually, if he's smart, he seeks them out, and asks them questions. not necessarily in the realm of finding out what he needs to do differently, rather, if he's such a great leader and culture builder, what did i do to generate the distrust currently being displayed from within my organization?

you have to have contrary opinions. you can't have nothing but yes men/women. you need to have people around you that will challenge you. that will call you out and at least offer a secondary opinion. doesn't mean you have heed every word spoken, but if you're going to be an effective leader, you need to surround yourself with people that may, and should, differ with you....and that are qualified to do so.....

i worked for a company not that long ago, and i reported directly to the owner. he's a salesman by nature, and not a logical thinker. he made decisions emotionally, w/out thought. he said "yes" far too often w/out consideration to the back end.

he was smart enough to know that was his major limitation, and he made it a point to form an executive team of people that were his polar opposite....to keep him in check. he would, at times, beg us to disagree with him on decisions he was making, just so he'd have the confidence to know if he was making the right decision or not.

he didn't always decide based on what we said, but we were always involved, and always consulted before major decisions were made.

it made the company more successful in the long run...but he had the self awareness to understand this, and that he NEEDED the 3 or 4 of us with him to make sure he was making correct decisions.

i didn't always agree with him, we're diametrically different in personality type and how we make decisions, but i always respected the fact that he knew that, and still wanted me to tell him what i thought, regardless of whether or not we agreed.

i don't get the idea that CBJ has reached that point of self awareness....of what his limitations are, and what he may have to do, in order to have true long term success at the level he, and we, expect.

Could easily be a dissenting group of people within the organization that are about to be fired. Haney doesn't have to be a genius to know who those people are and seek interviews with them

It's not the job of the media to ignore problems and what people inside the program are consistently saying because they worry about the timing of a story coming out. What time would be a good time for this story to come out? The timing doesn't change what's going on inside the program.

When you take the stance that he's actively trying to destroy the football program the details mean very little.

This is acteatyly good for Tennessee because Georgia is already being picked as the favorite to son the East next year which takes pressure off Butch and Tennessee.

Timing is everything. Those in the media know that. Attention was clearly on Tennessee yesterday with the announcement. Wait a week with no games and no big recruits confirming and the focus goes away and this story probably doesn't get the national attention that it could get by putting it out there when eyes are turned this way.

The intent with this is to ensure failure not to support fixing any problems that may or may not be within the program.

Never said Haney made it all up. He likely only picked the quotes that gave him the story he wanted from the start. You really think Hood was the only one willing to say a positive thing about Butch?

If VN had taught us anything it's that insiders like to embellish when given the chance

Actually, the main thing VN has taught me is that some people are going to blindly defend Butch Jones no matter what. If he starts out 1-2 next year there will STILL be plenty on here saying give him time. It's just a rough patch. Then, 2 days later when they fire him those SAME people will jump off the bandwagon and proclaim knowing he wasn't the right guy for a while now but had to keep supporting the program no matter what. Rinse and repeat.

I can't believe at this point in the guys UT tenure with all the warning signs flashing for him from the beginning that people still want to defend him. There have been several unexcuseable issues during his tenure on the field. And this article is not liked by some on here because it paints a light that many of us have said we've saw him in since the day 1 announcement when he first stepped on campus.

I figured we'd be picked 3rd or 4th next year in the east and I honestly wouldn't be too shocked if we won it.

OK,yes. Is this in regards to the weight room? I think he probably expected the new guy to keep the same standard of accountability as the old boss, but with different S&C goals. Since he had the previous guy for 10 years I imagine he didn't think he had to closely supervise his replacement. Looks like that was a mistake.

it's in regards to everything about that program.

you can't say "own it", and then turn around and say "we just won 8 games, everything's fine" or "we don't talk about the East as a goal".

you can't talk about the FL and GA games not being any more important than any other game, and then fist pump across the field or drop to your knees in tears when you win. you don't do that for beating Ohio or Va Tech or MO.....

it's about being consistent...it's not a cafeteria, you can't choose day to day what's important, based on the circumstance you find yourself in at any given time.

He's insecure and thinks nobody appreciates him. He keeps a black list of media people who cross him. Great qualities for a P5 school that wants to win championships.

There are plenty of things you can say about Butch, including many things that are spoken in the article. The reason that I have an issue with the article is because of the sensationalism and the timing. It reeks of a hit piece. I don't think Haney necessarily has an agenda against Butch, I think that he knew this article would make a big splash and timed it perfectly to do so

How is it a good thing for people to expect you to suck?

Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, and Washington all had lofty expectations heading into 2016.

agreed. which is why i don't think he's there. can he get there? yeah. but he's not going to do it on his own. he needs someone to really challenge him.

and it's not going to come from w/in, it's going to come from an AD that has a clear direction he expects from the program and the coach running it.

Take it however you want. It's a hit piece full of anonymous opinions backing the writers desired outcome. It was published the day after ut's biggest commitment. The agenda is pretty obvious imo

Agreed. Interesting that many of the negative quotes are almost exactly the same things I've read from a few of very own fans' prolific posts here on VolNation...Those are his souces imho.

Wow. This article will do wonders for our recruiting..

One good thing: Assistants WILL be leaving. Article cited that there were "defensive philosophy squabbles" between some of the defensive coaches. Shows why we were so bad on that side of the ball. Forget the players not buying in to Shoop's defense, our own assistants didn't buy in. Butch better clean house and get this trending back in the right direction.

Exactly. If players see coach's constantly fighting then how focused and how much trust do they have in them if the defensive coach's are constantly at it. The exact reason Butch needs to let Shoop get his guys in that he trusts and gets along with.I think that alone makes the defense look way better next season along with getting players healthy and bring in SEC caliber talent. But no way in hell Martinez is coaching here by time Spring practice gets here. He just isn't a good DB Coach and his recruiting has sucked this year. I think Martinez is 100% chance of being gone and depending on his relationship with Thig and Stripling atleast one is most likely gone. Definitely think Mahoney is the other 100% chance of being gone and depending on what Debord decides that could be another change. Would love to see CZA gone too. My personal choices would be Helfrich for OC and QB Coach then Kippy Brown for WR coach. No clue about who replaces Mahoney unless Debord stayed on as CO-OC and coached the O-Line. Which is a position he has spent most of his career coaching. I would be shocked if Butch ever got rid of Azzani but if that ever happened Kippy would be a great WR Coach hire or even better Kendal Briles if he isn't retained at Baylor. But that is if he doesn't get another OC job somewhere. But regardless of who stays and goes Butch has the perfect chance to make serious upgrades on his staff from a coaching, development and recruiting standpoint. We will see if or what changes he makes and how serious he wants to get everything turned around to be here past next season.

Butch doesn't feel good in his skin...apparently trash writers do...ok, so we're gonna have to get psychiatric help for Butch...hell, what about me...of all the gin joints in the world...I wind up here...:)

GO VOLS...BEAT HUSKERS!
