Nice find. I noticed that the right guard in 1891 weighed a whopping 150 lbs. I'm 6'2 215 lbs. I would have been a beast back then. :D

Two things:

What a waste on the new Jumbotron? They almost never use the full board. Mostly advertisements. They could have saved a lot of bail money since all they did was to change the advertisements to digital.

It is time for new band uniforms with a power T. The band has been financially neglected for many years and those 1963 uniforms need updating.

Great site. Whichever group painted the rock did an awesome job. That is the best I have ever seen the rock painted.

Gameday Rock...You should see them more often. Band paints it every Gameday. I was in the same section as Claire, actually.

I find it funny when people say that crappy paint jobs are the best paint jobs ever...I question whether they've looked on Gamedays

This couldn't be more incorrect.

The uniforms are tradition, not old.

Actually it's by rule that band uniforms be outdated. Compared to other marching bands ours are pretty cool.

My favorite picture of The Rock is one I took after the UCLA game where Jerry Colquitt's UT career ended... Some faithful fans were petitioning for a 6th year for Colquitt. This, of course, was before anybody knew jusy how good Peyton was going to be...If I can get it scanned to my computer I'll post it...

Anyone know why Smokey's name is not spelled Smoky? I assume he was named after the Smoky Mountains.

The band uniforms are just fine as they are. They don't need updating. I know it's just my opinion, but you can't do any better than the traditional, classic military look for a band uniform.

Can someone please explain the "Last Tackle" tradition to me. Was mentioned on GVX that there will be one for the Kentucky game. I'm guessing it has to do with the last tackle made during the regular season.

I believe it's their last time hitting the sled, but I may be mistaken...

from last year..

Vols Look to Sharpen Focus During 'Last Tackle' - TENNESSEE OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
Only one full practice date remains for UT before the 2008 season finale against Kentucky this Saturday night....

Thursday also marks the day of the "Last Tackle," a Tennessee tradition in which Fulmer uses the occasion to gather his seniors at one end of a double line of teammates and offer a few kind words about each individual. The players then take turns plowing into a tackling dummy one last time, to the cheers and salutes of their teammates.
"We've done it this way for quite some time," Fulmer said of Thursday's annual ritual.
