Technically its a play-in game, so unless we win, thereby playing our way in, we did not make the tournament field of 64. So IMHO no we don't have a chance to lose a tournament game until Friday in Raleigh.

Not the Iowa team that beat the brakes off a Michigan team by 20. Both wins were a long time ago. As I said, both at their best I think Iowa wins it.

Michigan also lost to Charlotte and Indiana. It's not like the better team always wins. I'm also a Michigan State fan and have watched them play Iowa. Iowa is not a pushover, but they're also not this juggernaut you seem think they are.

You're such a joke as always. You think Iowa has looked at our last 5 games and thinks "Yes, we got a easy first round opponent we will beat" lol

I don't know what the Iowa fans are thinking, but I'm sure not thinking UT has an easy first round opponent in Iowa. I believe UT has a good chance to advance but Iowa has plenty of talent to beat the pants off of UT if they play well and we play poorly. If both teams play their best I like UT right now, but still in a competitive game.

Grew up in Iowa, but no live in TN so i keep up with the hawk eyes and cyclones. They are a solid team and similar to UT in the inconsistency of play. When they are on they are on, when they aren't, its bad.. Iowa is young, all freshman and sophomore talent. UT is much more athletic and SHOULD be able to win. But think we will have to work for it!

Actually 'technically' it is round one of the NCAA tournament - the 'play in game' styling - was replaced by the NCAA simply expanding the field, like they did when they expanded to 64. But, I agree the structure and feel is of a play-in-game.

It should be a good game - Go Vols!

Just saw on ESPN.com that Iowa's coach's son is having surgery Wednsday just a few hours before the game and the coach will fly from Iowa City to Dayton just before Tip OFF

The thing that should scare us most about Iowa is their size, followed by their passing/pg play.

We've not done well against size this year at all. Stokes and Maymon have both struggled to get shots off against it. Iowa's starting center is 7'1 and his back-up is 6'10. Their starting PF is 6'9.

One of our biggest strengths is rebounding, they rebound better than us. They are 7th in the country in rebounding.

They pass well too, 11th in the nation in assists. They have a solid PG who averages 8 points and 4 assists per game. Guys like him have tended to have games that far exceed their average against us this year. Actually, most PG's we've faced this year have bettered their averages against us this season.

The did stumble down the stretch, but part of that was playing some really good teams in the run. Inexplicable loss to NW though. NW shot really well in the game and Iowa, who normally is a top 10 offense, couldn't buy a bucket.

The NCAA says it's the first round. So it is. The public doesn't see it that way. Bracket challenges don't even tend to be due til Midnight Thursday before the tourney "starts". Even the billion dollar bracket doesn't require picking these games. They consider the field set when 64 teams are bracketed.

Yeah the games I saw them early in the season, and when they were playing well, they rebounded well as a team. They had at least 4 guys crashing after every attempt. It will help that Stokes and Maymon are hard to gain rebounding position on, but the rest of our guys need to be ready to put a body on somebody too.

If we don't bog down offensively I like our chances to face UMass Fri. But no more 6 or 7 minute scoring droughts, please.

Except our SOS is ranked a lot higher.

Also our styles are nothing alike.

Calling an easy win by a team that was just bounced from their conference tourney by Northwestern and lost something like their last 6 out of 7 is a bit of a headscratcher.

Learn to read buddy. I backtracked on my statement about playing styles. Also, I never said if the game would be a blowout. 5-10 is not a blowout. It will be close but I think Iowa pulls away at the end on free throws for 5-10 point margin.

I wish basketball could actually be talked about in the Basketball forum. It feels like 95% of posts are "Fahr Zo" or some other argument about whether it is a play-in game or the first round.

You guys really have conprehension issues around here. I never said anything close to making the assumption that Iowa is a powerhouse team. Someone mentioned UT beating a UVA squad, and I mentioned Iowa Beating a Michigan team. Both wins are irrelevant, because neither team can play that way all the time. Bottom line for me is that Mcrae and Marble can carry their teams, or cancel each other out. The game, to me, falls on the rest of the guys. Stokes is a huge problem for Iowa, but iowa's bigs can pull him away fromt he basket on D. I like both teams, but I just feel that Iowa has a better shot especially in a close game. Hell, good luck to both. Both of these teams can get hot and make a run to the Elite 8, and it not shock anyone.

Saw that too. Your heart really goes out to the coach, his son, and their family. As a parent I just can't imagine how tough it will be for them all that day.

Well of course technically you are correct. I was simply making light of the fact that we have a chance to lose an NCAA tourney game. I am not a Bonzo fan. Love the Vols but he is not the coach of our future. I want an overachiever, not underachiever.

No as others have stated you are "technically" correct. We are in apparently. I try not to get into the "fire CCM" debate until AFTER the season. I'm still looking for a sweet 16 run. Its not that far fetched if we get past Iowa. I think we beat Umass and I like our chances against Duke. IMHO its a good match up. They don't play defense so the Vols will score 70 on them and if they're not white hot from 3 land I think our D shuts them down. Hey its March and all is possible. :)

That's the crazy part about this team, on a given night I think they are capable of beating just about anyone in the country.
