Vols starting QB

It is a shame to have to pick one over the other. I think either could become All-SEC.

If Dormady is selected, it would almost be a sure thing JG would transfer and we would probably go at least one year without a strong qb after QD graduates. I haven't heard that we have a 4* on the scene for 2018 or 2019, (NOT THAT STARS MATTER!)

The only person in danger of leaving is Dormady, if he's not named the starter. JG has four more years and could easily take the job away from Doemady , if he falters. I doubt very seriously JG transfers from UT.

It does if neither proves to be superior. It puts pressure on the defense to have to prepare for both.

It's not a knock on either one to say clear separation hasn't occured. Each has their strengths so to expect our OC to be able to create a game plan to highlight the strengths of each one is not asking too much.

<blue font> It must be why most guys who make their daily bread in the NFL as coaches use and promote the 2 QB system. Seems like the bulk of NCAA BCS programs do as well, seems like you're ahead of the curve. If 2 pressures defense, let's roll out 3 perhaps??

If none of our QBs can truly separate themselves as a clear starter, then we are screwed. You need to build continuity and consistency with an offense. Hard to do with 2 QBs.

Yes it is a knock if nobody separates. It means that we really dont have a QB thats ready to step into the SEC and be a starter.

If both qb's are equal, would Butch start the more experienced or the one who would give you 4 years ? He has leaned toward the experience factory in the past.
in fairness, when he did that, it was in year 1 and 2, and not having anyone else on the depth chart behind peterman or worley, except dobbs. in his effort to plan on the future, i think he wanted to see if he could get thru the first year with Nate and Justin, and keep Dobbs on the shelf so he'd have 4 years left of elgibility. then they had to burn it. tried it again the next year, and he wound up having to start the rest of that season too. had he been able to use the red shirt on Dobbs, he'd be eligible to play this year.

and we didn't know, at the time, that we'd have a QD or JG on the roster at this point, so it worked out, in theory.
If all things are equal, common sense says the start the younger player.

not always, depending on the bigger picture, it may make more sense to see if you can squeeze another year by red shirting the younger guy. like we tried to do with Dobbs, and that we did do with JG.

the situation is different headed in to this season than it was in 13 and 14, so there's no need to go further down the depth chart looking for the "future". so it affords the opportunity to put these two guys in a competitive situation and see which one comes out on top.

the only way we lose, long term, is if neither guy gets it, and no one comes out clearly ahead.

i am of the mindset that if they both come out on truly equal footing, then neither of them probably did much, or enough, to separate. i doubt the notion that both are superstars right now, and they simply can't make a decision on which one....and it's a "can't lose either way" situation. if that's the case, then i definitely think they go with experience, slight as it may be, and give JG more time to develop. that's worst case scenario btw, not what i think will eventually happen.

Not slinging mud (ok, I am) but maybe both QB's understand our "big uglies" haven't blocked the last few years and by that account Both will be needed

A good QB that can get rid of the ball quickly will also help the OL.

there's a lot that needs to happen to positively affect the passing game. protection would be nice. reliable running game. and WR's that run good routes and can go get the ball.

it's definitely not all on the QB, but obviously, it's an important part. anxious to see how the new coaches fit in and fit all that together. cause it all needs work, especially with a new trigger man.
