are my expectations for NCAA basketball getting too high, or is this a down year for bball? I don't see how Duke without any real proven inside talent can be fringe top 10. They couldn't rebound last year and it caused them to finish unranked. I don't see who's going to be crashing the boards for them this year.

I wonder if UT would be one or two spots higher had Crews not been suspended. Maybe it wouldn't make much difference.

I like being ranked 7th.

Random note - just noticed William and Mary opens the season at Georgetown on Nov. 10, then at NC State on Nov. 15. Tough start.

Hat - do you know how the board of coaches is selected?

I don't think it means that college bball is down. I think if anything college bball is as good as it's been in a while because there are no more straight-to-the-NBA highschoolers and that inevitably leads to an increase in the talent and overall level of play that we see...

I think Duke's lofty ranking is just another piece of evidence of what media darlings they...and in particular Coach K...are

You're right...they have no business being a fringe top 10 team....there ranking is based strictly off of reputation and the media's love affair with the program and the coach

I like the idea of preseason rankings and I believe that the top 10 to 15 are pretty legitimate (sp) but them you might as well do a top 40 imo because 15-25 or 15-40 they all could easily be there at the end of the year....i like NC, UT up front, USC is overated imo

Duke will start off hot as they always do and crack the top ten...then they will enter january with ACC play and fade back...definately top 20 team, doubt they will make it out of the second round though....Kyle Singler will be a good post player for duke, got ALOT of young talent, they will return to glory in a couple years...

SEC doesn't look too great either.

UT, Arkansas, Miss. St., UK should make the tourney. Other than that, I'm not sure.

Hat - are you going to do a write-up judging the conferences?

I think 7th is about right considering that we finished as a hot team on everyones radar and we have so much coming back. However, other than winning a few games in the tournament, they did stumble towards the end of the season and underachieved quite a bit.

As much as a #7 ranking looks good and feels good, with the schedule we have, be prepared for the team to be similar to last year's 20-23 wins at most with 10 or so losses.

I would have added Geargia to the mix had it not been for their off-court struggles. Vanderbilt will be a potential bubble team. A.J. Oglivy might be the best incoming freshman coming into the league.

A #7 ranking is fine by me. As long as the season is, rankings aren't important until you start jocking for tourney seeds. I would be concerned w/ a higher ranking some players would feel they would only have to show up. Bruce seems to keep them focused though.
