It has become a business. We win a few SEC titles and play in a few BCS bowls in the next 4 or 5 years, CLK and the athletic department will reap the monetary benefits of hiring this staff.

It is a business and as Hamilton said, the athletic department can not have the football team not being very good. The football team runs the department, it has to be good. You have to spend money to make money.

I really like the idea of having the #1 recruiting class in 2010. But I want to see the best possible situation in 09 as well. 6 days to NSD.

Why are people geting upset? We just spread the money around differently. If our total pay for coaches was 30-40% higher than anyone else I could see a problem....

Bottom line...who cares what other people think.

every other team in the SEC is pissed because we took half of the schools best recruiters, they just need something to cry about so they cry about the money.

How many NCAA teams are going to begin luring reputable NFL coordinators to fill coordinator spots on their sidelines? Monte Kiffin is really an anomaly. Other than that these guys are all getting market value as far as I'm concerned.

Mandel is wrong about UT setting a precedent. Big money schools (OH State, AL, FL, LSU, et. al.) were already throwing out mega-millions to land hot coaches and assistants before Mike Hamilton went hunting with big bucks and brought home Kiffin family values. All Tennessee did was follow the trend in order to keep up with the Joneses. We certainly wouldn't have gotten very far by being stingy. The good thing is that this staff knows that they're going to have to earn their salaries. That should pay off handsomely for Volunteer football.

Bottom line - Total staff salary is about $600,000 more than it would be if CPF's regime was still in place, and 4th highest in the SEC.

Hardly unrealistic.

As was said by someone earlier this year, maybe BPV? Tennessee was the first out on the block hiring a coach with all the money from the ESPN/ABC contracts. It will become the norm.

Also as Lex said, Monte is anomaly. Any college in American would love to have a guy like Monte on their staff with his vast array of knowledge.

What a moron. Do you think he'd complain if his editor took a paycut so he could make more money? Does SI pay more to their writers than other magazines? IF so, is that fair? Maybe he shoud take a pay cut so the other writers at smaller publications won't feel so bad. Idiot!!

I agree. I do not understand why they are making a big deal out of our coaches paychecks, when we are, as stated in other posts and fact, only 4th overall. I was a little surprised to see the staff salary was only $600,000 over last years, I though it would be much higher. GO VOLS!

Other coaches in the SEC can give part of their salary to their assistants if they want to. That's not Tennessee's problem.

And I'm sorry, but it's not my fault that other schools don't have the fan base we do, who are willin' to pay out our earned money on a ticket to see our Vols play.

Nice article, thanks for posting. I don't think you can ever say a school is dead set for a #1 class this far ahead of time. What if we have another 5-7 year, which who knows with the three fail-migos at QB? Or what if there are recurring conflicts in the staff and several key members leave or are hired away? I think a top 10 class is a solid bet but recruits will be worried about the ability of the staff to actually coach if we have another dismal year.

I am so sick of seeing and hearing these morons talk about the cash we are spending...Are we spending more than Alabama, Florida, or LSU for coaches?...No we are not but for some reason we are the ones getting the hose here...Than just proves that they are scared, very scared...Fear the Orange!!!

No, it just simply means they're clamoring for an impact piece that people will believe when only telling 1/2 the story.

I just don't see why people don't understand why we paid the assistant coaches as much money as we did. I take care of the employees that work under me, and they, in turn, take care of their responsibilities and make themselves, and me, look good. I just don't understand why someone would not understand this. Hell, if Saban didn't care about fattening his wallet, don't you think he would do the same? Course, he would have to realize that he alone can't make his program win by himself....
