Freshman QB Brian Maurer was not present during the open period of today’s practice. He posted on social media earlier this afternoon, apparently from Vanderbilt’s medical center in Nashville.

JT Shrout was first up before Jarrett Guarantano in drills with the running backs.

The most notable note from today was the absence of quarterback Brian Maurer. The freshman was deemed “doubtful” to play by Jeremy Pruitt earlier Wednesday and also sent out a social media post, since deleted, that had him at Vanderbilt Medical.

JT Shrout and Jarrett Guarantano continued to split all the reps.

Wednesday’s throwing session was much better than yesterday’s, although neither quarterback was perfect.

Freshman Jerrod Means received praise, including from Guarantano and Chaney, for two strong routes.

Latrell Bumphus did individual drills on the side before participating in the walk-through run-scheme drill

It was the JT Shrout and Jarrett Guarantano show during the final open day of practice. The two quarterbacks were the only two scholarship quarterbacks to take reps during drills, with Shrout taking the first rep while they were working on RPOs and hand-offs with the quarterbacks. When the quarterbacks began to work with the wide receivers, both Shrout and Guarantano took reps at the same time.

Guarantano didn’t look good throwing the ball on Tuesday, but he rebounded decently on Wednesday, as he was much crisper throwing the football. As for Shrout, he continues to show off his arm during practice.

Jim Chaney kept a watchful eye on the quarterbacks and wide receivers during today’s practice. He consistently emphasized to the wide receivers that they would have to be very physical in their routes this weekend against the Gamecocks.

In drills with the running backs on Wednesday, it was Shrout going through the very short line before Guarantano. Perhaps that is a sign the Vols are leaning toward handing the Californian his first career start. However, Pruitt noted earlier Wednesday that Shrout needs more reps than Guarantano, so the Vols also could be trying to fast-track his development knowing he at the very least will be their backup quarterback for Saturday's game.
Tennessee was without starting defensive lineman LaTrell Bumphus for last week's game at Alabama, but the converted tight end, who's been in the starting lineup since the second game of the season against BYU, was a little more involved in Wednesday's practice than he was a day earlier.
Six true freshmen already have started this season, and there's at least a chance Jaylen McCollough could make it seven on Saturday night. The former four-star prospect replaced starter Theo Jackson in the second quarter against Alabama and basically went the rest of the way, recording a sack and four tackles in the most significant action of his career.

Not good. If Maurer is really at Vanderbilt there is something more than just basic concussion protocol.
Or they're getting tests to make sure there isn't a bigger issue.... or they want to make sure they're not fooled again by the "good signs" that said he was ready for Bama.

Either way, getting the best evals possible is a good thing and not necessarily a bad sign at all.

Either way he’s definitely out this week.

Makes me quite nervous that he’s been taken to VMC

Don't be. They are one of the best in the nation dealing with concussion and head injuries. Years ago my son playing in a high school game dropped a RB short of the goal line the last two plays before half time on sweepas his way. Time ran out, half time started both teams ran off the field except my son. He was just left standing in the end zone. One of his coaches ran toward him, several staff sat him down, they called the ambulance over and coach waved me down to come out of the bleachers. They told me he was in trouble and which hospital did I prefer. A personal friend recommended the hospital where she worked and the ambulance guy told me, for any head injury in middle Tennessee send your family to Vanderbilt. I went with his recommendation and lost a friend forever. Glad I did. He had a very difficult concussion, lost his ability to recall places and names. He did not know who his mother or I were initially. It was scary for a kid to wake up in a world where everyone he knew and places he lived for all his life to be gone to him. Doctors told us this was not all that uncommon, some people lose their numbers, don't know what the #1 is or what addition and subtraction are, things like that. They made no promises if any, some, or all would come back which caused his mother and grandmother to wail his having lost his memory of them. He stayed at Vandy overnight, finally recognized his mother. With treatment it took about a month for him to fully recover and the Vandy staff were some of the best as I researched afterward. Funny stuff as his friends had to lead him around school to where his classes were, he recognized none of them including his girlfriend. He was pranked with some really funny stuff during this time.

So good to hear a positive story about your son. Many friends of mine had concussions and played through them or felt like they had to from pressure or otherwise.

I’m hoping for the best case scenario for Maurer
