Vols Practice Thread Tuesday

I can see your point on him not looking good but let me throw this at you. Can not being able to practice with the 1s be a reason why he didn’t look good? Chemistry does matter. How about he knew he was going to get pulled so “ JG could see the field.” I can see that messing someone up knowing theyre only get a series or two. The first series he was out there he didn’t look good but made plays, gave the O a spark and took the team down the field and got points on the board. Maurer can only make mistakes if the coach gives him a chance to play. All of us know that the starting qb as of now isn’t doing the team any good. One more thing can’t remeber but wasn’t Dobbs terrible at practice?

I don’t remember but Dobbs was working aerospace while most of the conference was struggling to make air planes. Everything went through him and he took that role on with confidence. I don’t think any of these QBs have that and You can fault Pruitt and not fault him at the same time. He has to play someone whether he wants to or not.

Yes, chemistry does help and it wouldn’t hurt anything to throw some reps at him. Sometime tells me though there’s a lot in the closed portions of practice that tell a lot and we just simply will never know what it is or isn’t. Unless the players leaving spill the beans and reveal something that shakes Tennessee football to the point where someone has to make a call on coaches

That’s why the coaches tell him before hand what they expect. If they let him to go out and do his best and give 100% then any interception or fumble or bad pass can be fixed with coaching.

If they can’t get a player to understand that then they shouldn’t be here.

It’s not difficult to get over making a mistake and after watching Maurer the other day I don’t think an INT or two will hurt his confidence.

I like Maurer. He’s definitely got the arm talent.

Think about it though if the receivers are at odds with JG because of this or that which is known by all players now. What tells us that they won’t flip on him too? Yes, it’s rare to happen twice but it definitely can If he tosses a few picks and then you have another guy who’s lost. To me it just isn’t worth it to throw him out there against the best Defense in this league with exception to LSU

To your point on talking up players or coaching them past mistakes. Yes, they should be able to and most do but once the mistakes pile up the talks become cloudy. This has happened on the sideline with Pruitt and JG at least once already.

His eyes where glazed over against BYU and didn’t even attempt to communicate with Pruitt

@Dudleys87 I don't think it would damage Maurer's brain or anything (outside of literal damage to his brain :) ) to take a few lumps against Georgia and Alabama. He won't be good, but the experience could help us make a late run and maybe win 3 or 4 games this season. I mean, all these guys came here to play against Alabama and Georgia.

While this is certainly true it could also go the other way rather quickly since they’re likely to out score us 120ish to 10-20

And yes I’m being generous with the 20. I love the Vols and it’s painful that we’re doing this **** again

As much as I want a change at qb, maybe Pruitt is letting JG take the punches from Georgia and Bama. I never say quit, but let’s be honest we don’t have the team to compete with those guys this year. If we were playing sound ball I would say any given Saturday but JG can’t lead and the defense looks lost more times than not.
Exactly.

I don't disagree, but JG should be benched on general principle at this point. I mean, I'm sorry, but his performances have cost us the season. I know I'll get argued with, but I put BYU and GAST on him. A QB1 gets his team rallied and finds a way to win those games.

I’m not disagreeing at all. If your 1 is looking you in the eye and all you see is clouds rolling by it’s time to change. That’s what I understood happened on the sidelines against BYU.

I’m not sure who is was but when he ran that TD in and got up and lost it I thought that’s what we’re missing there it is! Only to be crushed.

(Against Chatt I think)

Someone please help a fella out lol

Is Pruitt trying to tank for the buyout?

Seriously, I feel it's the only thing that makes sense.

He is unprepared for Georgia State, gets steam rolled, and then tells fans the sun will rise.

He has stuck with JG through thick and thin, last year included, and JG has shown time and time again he is not the guy.

I just don't know what to make of it.

If recruiting starts tanking I don't know what UT will do.

Probably fire him, pay a buy out, and the. Hire Alabama's WR coach.

I can only hope you forgot the blue font....

I do blame Butch's mess... and Pruitt should've made sound decisions from the time the contract was signed until he leaves.
Decisions like a seasoned head coach might make? Oh wait, I forgot Pruitt isn’t one. I know it’s not popular but UT hired a FIRST time head coach. He’s learning on the job. He’s gonna **** up. I’d rather him do it now during a rebuild than with a team that is a serious contender.

Obviously JG is over BUT you Aren’t beating UGa w ANY QB so why get a freshman killed in his first start ? Is that smart ?
Dobbs' first game was Bama.

As you say, UT isn't likely to beat UGA or Bama but the experience can still help if they limit the gameplan and focus on what they "can do"... or one of them. I don't think I could run JG out there considering the message that would send to the rest of the team.

Not every player is some precious little flower that needs protected and has a soft mentality. Some are mentally tough and know they’re going to make mistakes....but still want to play.

Toss Maurer out there and let him see what he can do. He’s a Florida QB. Much better quality of HS football down there than in New Jersey.

Pruitts probably scared JG will transfer and he will be stuck with JT and Maurer with no experienced option at QB. Oh well. Seasons over already. Time to be a man.

If a freshman rolls out there and throws a couple picks we basically have JG all over again. He’s ruined mentally before he gets his feet underneath him. I’m not saying that’s every case but there’s a good chance it happens.

If a kid is so mentally soft his career is ruined because of a bad outting, my guess he was never going to be a successful QB in the SEC.

If BM goes in and gets stomped by GA, it could finish any hope he ever had of being a good QB. No way in hell anyone on this site is better than our coaches. If you think you are.........
Maurer wasn't a very good QB to begin with if he let's one game define his career

I am fully behind our staff and Coach Pruitt, so get off your high horse I didn't say I was better than anybody. I am sure he may get stomped, but if one game is going to ruin his confidence he isn't very tough to begin with. I am not expecting him to come in and be all American at this stage. We are talking about a football team with a Junior QB that has been playing 3 years and is not getting any better, in fact he is regressing. I never said just stick with BM, play him and Shrout and if they aren't doing anything heck put JG back in to see if he can do something. Split there time up and let the hot hand prevail. But there is no way in Haiti, we should stick exclusively with JG at this point. He is all world in practice so shake it up and give BM and Shrout more reps with the 1's. And like I said at the beginning here I am not on the fire Pruitt wagon but I can disagree about the Qb position without thinking I am better than the staff. VFL!

My tl/dr opinion: I have to assume that for many of you it never crossed your minds that while you may not like it, the coaches believe that JG gives us the best chance if even by the slimmest of margins. We as fans have no idea how the QB's perform in 11 on 11 drills in practice. We have no idea if the backups have even learned the playbook. If you believe for just a second that any coach is going to play a guy that is not the best they have, then that proves to me that you have no clue how competitive coaches really are. Pruitt would not force Chaney and Tee to play JG if they truly wanted one of the backups. Chaney is not the type to allow that anyway. If you think Pruitt is intentionally tanking for the buyout, you must have the IQ of a dog pecker gnat. There would be no way to keep that a secret, and in turn would be career suicide.
