Vols Practice Thread Tuesday

I agree with you we won't win this game, but I never understand this idea a freshman will get hurt or ruin his confidence. Same excuse every year we talk about starting an underclassmen

If a freshman rolls out there and throws a couple picks we basically have JG all over again. He’s ruined mentally before he gets his feet underneath him. I’m not saying that’s every case but there’s a good chance it happens.

It's for that very reason that I hope that either a) JG shows improvement or b) We wait until MSU or even SC to make a QB change.

I’m assuming you watched a freshman come out against FL correct? Dude is a gunslinger pretty sure throwing a pick isn’t going to mess him up mentally. Having JG come out and suck it up again is going to do nothing for the team or the fan base.

I’m not sure what else they can do for it to finally click.

By a first hand account they’ve simplified it as much as they can and he still can’t get down the basics. I don’t know what it is for sure but he’s completely checked out mentally from the game of football or he’s injured and we just aren’t aware.

Reminds me a lot of Cam and the Panthers. Something is way off and that’s painfully obvious

Or he's making a calculated decision to let JG get slaughtered in the Murderer's Row stretch before trotting out Shrout and / or Maurer.

Frankly, I'd just start Shrout and see what he gives us, but I can understand the rationale that you'd rather break in a new QB after Georgia and Bama.

Yes indeed.....AND to keep them healthy until then

I did and to be honest he didn’t do much either. In fact I posted about it in the GT. “Can we all agree that Chaney is handcuffed at this point?” Again I did say it isn’t every case but there’s a good chance it happens. IF the locker room has flipped on JG and the backups know that then what happens if things go bad when we make a permanent change? It’s safe to say doubt will start to creep in and it could be very bad for a young QB in this league

Casey Clausen's first start was against Bama and that turned out pretty good.

Some guys have the it factor some guys don’t. I just don’t want to see a young kid ruined because he thinks the mistakes are to much like JG

If BM goes in and gets stomped by GA, it could finish any hope he ever had of being a good QB. No way in hell anyone on this site is better than our coaches. If you think you are.........

LOL do you think that’s the first time the kid would’ve gotten beat by a better team?

Jeez every other team with a young QB seems to do fine after a loss but heaven forbid one of our young QBs gets beat, he’ll never be the same again.

Not at all what he’s getting at I don’t think. We don’t have an elite Qb and based on film alone none of them bounce back easily so throwing a few picks out the gate and there’s great potential for taking steps back mentally.

No one is questioning talent. Well other than that guy taking reps with the 1s

I can see your point on him not looking good but let me throw this at you. Can not being able to practice with the 1s be a reason why he didn’t look good? Chemistry does matter. How about he knew he was going to get pulled so “ JG could see the field.” I can see that messing someone up knowing theyre only get a series or two. The first series he was out there he didn’t look good but made plays, gave the O a spark and took the team down the field and got points on the board. Maurer can only make mistakes if the coach gives him a chance to play. All of us know that the starting qb as of now isn’t doing the team any good. One more thing can’t remeber but wasn’t Dobbs terrible at practice?

It is a tough way to learn. But you've got to give the rest of your offense a chance to compete.

Playing a defeated force in such a key position spreads the defeatism to the rest of your team, merely reinforcing the poor morale and losing culture existing on this team.

Maurer plays with courage and charisma. He will not be perfect and he will make the mistakes true freshmen make. But the effort and enthusiasm he puts into it will help the others through what will be a trying time.

That’s why the coaches tell him before hand what they expect. If they let him to go out and do his best and give 100% then any interception or fumble or bad pass can be fixed with coaching.

If they can’t get a player to understand that then they shouldn’t be here.

It’s not difficult to get over making a mistake and after watching Maurer the other day I don’t think an INT or two will hurt his confidence.
