Vols Practice Thread #8

I don't coach... I don't attend clinics... I do, however, look at practice videos... I made a benign comment about literally EVERY football player/team that exists today. I even said "I guess it's the proper way to coach." A better response from a learned user would have been something along the lines of: "It's like a boxer practicing against a speed or heavy bag. At some point in their training they will spar against a live opponent." Questioning my credentials when I never claimed any is a waste of space.

Maybe it wsn't such a good idea to tie the practice noodles to "practice heroes" without having the credentials to make you the one to judge the practice heroes? Just a thought.

Right. It's not the commenting on practice techniques, it's the smugness on the original comment and then the response to mine. When parents/fans at practice ask why we teach a technique a certain way, I am usually happy to explain. If they ask why then say they wouldn't teach it that way, I generally brush them off. Not saying I'm right, just stating an opinion.

Thanks Fingers

Bryan Aiken looks like a NFL DE.
6'4 260 true freshman looks like a LB.
We red-shirt him and Bumphis and we'll be well on our way to some quality competition and depth!

J Blakeley can still move at 285 lbs! 4 year guy has finally found a home. Watch out!

If you read smugness in my comment then it wasn't intended whatsoever. In fact, I literally wrote it as generic as I could so no one could possibly conclude I was calling any one out for being a practice hero. I guess I could put it in context a little better - it's is impossible to discern, for me as a 3rd party observer, who looks good and who doesn't in a 2 minute video clip. As far as I know, every single player across the country is just as good as the others when swatting noodles. Did Derek Barnett swat practice noodles better than the hundreds of other DE's across the nation? I can't answer that. But, what I can answer is he was pretty damned good at doing it to live humans who had been trained to counter his swats.

I guess I should have just said "first page" and left it at that....

That’s what I was thinking, BA is listed at LB but definitely could take on the weight to help us at DL/DE

He's actually practicing with DL already, even though he's listed at OLB.

He's going to be a 290-300 lb guy in 18 months. it's not out of the realm of possibility he plays some this year, either.
Can't wait to see how he develops.

Yeah noticed it in today’s videos but hadn’t in previous practices... maybe I missed it but thought it may be for depth and better fit for him

I know everyone does it so I guess it's the proper way to coach... but, I just don't see how swatting orange noodle arms will teach you to perfect a technique. I guess that is why some people are practice heroes all across the country. Things change when an equally talented guy is lined up across you using a counter-move.
Because repetition creates muscle memory without the extra injuries that come from more full contact.

Basketball players dribble between chairs and shoot free throws with no one else there.

Baseball players with a "blind spot" in their swing even in MLB will set a ball on a tee in that location and practice that swing.

You find something similar in most sports. The possibility of injury in football makes it more important.

Yeah, i think it is a better fit for him. He'll be on scholarship in no time. He's a basketball player too so he's pretty athletic. Under recruited because he started football to late.
Yet another find by Pruitt. Former Teammates with Reggie Grimes who some think is the top prospect in TN this year.

Tennessee Talent
D-Line
Gooden 6'3 300
Emerson 6'3 310
Simmons 6'1 330
Middleton 6'7 311
Bumphus 6'4 273
Aiken 6'4 260
Then, of course, we have Barron and Hardy coming in probably.

The Volunteer State has some talent.
