Jeremy Pruitt’s public praise for Henry To’oto’o yesterday does not appear to be false bluster, as the freshman linebacker saw ample reps with the 1s — in both indy and team drills
As we were leaving practice, Bituli and To’oto’o were on the first-team defense during 7-on-7 work. Notably, Tennessee was short a linebacker Wednesday, as Will Ignont was not present at practice.
Elsewhere defensively, today was Shawn Shamburger’s turn to get work at the nickel/STAR. The Vols continue to rotate bodies there, with Jaylen McCollough, Cheyenne Labruzza, Bryce Thompson and Shamburger all seeing time there during the first week of opening viewing periods.
simontonElijah Simmons was back out there impressing, beating Aubrey Solomon and Savion Williams in two reps. Willams later beat Kingston Harris and Darel Middleton also smoked Latrell Bumphus. While I was watching a separate pass rush drill, Tracy Rocker was very complimentary of Solomon and Ja’Quain Blakely.
hubbsThe receivers caught the ball well and the placement by the quarterbacks was good, too. It’s worth noting that Chris Weinke and Chaney are certainly looking for their backup quarterback, as both J.T. Shrout and Brian Maurer were getting 2-3 more reps a piece than Jarrett Guarantano was and there’s not physical issues or concerns with JG. It’s simply more reps to the back up quarterbacks as the staff looks for one of the two to separate themselves.
Maurer has a quick release, and while it doesn't always come out as a perfect spiral, the rookie has the fastball down. He whistled one a little high to Cedric Tillman on a slant, but finished one set with an impressive throw on a dime to the boundary with Jim Chaney and Chris Weinke stressing to the quarterbacks that they place the ball to where the wideouts had to flatten out their routes after breaking to the sideline.
Shrout looks a little smoother mechanically and doesn't throw many wobblers, and his passes have a little less zip than Maurer's, but he got into a good rhythm and was hitting his targets more often than not on Thursday.
Kennedy remained in the middle of what's become a familiar first group with Wanya Morris at left tackle, Trey Smith at left guard, K'Rojhn Calbert at right guard and Marcus Tatum and right tackle.
p.brownFreshman Elijah Simmons was back out there going through drills after getting poked in the eye early in practice on Wednesday.
