NOTES
***J.J. Peterson Wednesday update: Still not on the practice field.***
Rucker

This time, the order of the backs was usually Ty Chandler followed by Tim Jordan, Trey Coleman, Madre London, then Jeremy Banks.

I’ll say this about Tennessee’s backs: All of them look a lot bigger than last year. Chandler is still the “smallest” of them all, but you can tell a difference with him with pads on compared to last season.

Brandon Johnson, Jordan Murphy, and a handful of others all had drops. Johnson ran back through his drill when he made a drop and corrected his mistake, but there were still more drops than coaches would’ve liked today.

Some of the throws from Tennessee’s quarterbacks weren’t exactly on target either. It wasn’t a horrible day for the Vols’ passing attack in the open portion of practice, but it certainly could’ve been better.

Todd Kelly Jr. continues to look good at safety, and he’s been practicing well this fall. That continued today, and he looks leaner and quicker than he did his last two years with Tennessee. Theo Jackson also looks really good at safety, and the Vols may have to find a way to play four or five safeties this year between them, Nigel Warrior, Micah Abernathy, and Shamburger.
Nathanael Rutherford

Chandler looked really solid up close Wednesday, but Banks had some strong moments, too. Banks runs violently, even in drills. He also caught the ball well during routes with the QBs. Chandler is the best receiver of the bunch

Finally, we have little idea what Fant’s skills are right now, but he’s definitely on “the dudes” list. At 6-2 and a shredded 225 pounds, he’s the most physically imposing ‘back in the group, IMO. He runs a bit high, but could be an interesting weapon in the red-zone/short-yardage situations.

Jordan Murphy had a fantastic grab on his backside after slipping during his route and Cedric Tillman continues to impress, but the most noticeable part of the period were the drops on basic slants from Josh Palmer, Marquez Callaway and Brandon Johnson.

There were several times during the routes on air period where Jennings didn’t take a single rep. He’s still moving a bit gingerly, but with three weeks until the opener, there’s a plan in place to have him ready for West Virginia.

JT Shrout has a live arm but he’s got some ‘Wild Thing’ in him. There’s times when the ball leaves his hand it’s anyones guess where it’s going.

Josh Palmer had two drops in a row from Chryst on slant routes. The first was slightly behind the sophomore and bounced off his left shoulder pads. The second was even further behind Palmer and prompted Chryst to let out a groan of frustration,

McBride threw well high on a slant route and Shrout overthrew his target on a double-move down the middle of the field, and Brandon Johnson had a ball on a crossing route go through his hands.

After getting some looks at the defensive end spot on Tuesday, Shy Tuttle was back in his more familiar nose tackle spot during defensive line drills on Wednesday with Kyle Phillips and Alexis Johnson either side of him.

Emmit Gooden continues to get work at the nose with freshmen Kingston Harris working alongside him opposite of Kivon Bennett.
