The media saw just a single period of practice today, so there’s not much to report.
Brandon Kennedy was again working with the S&C staff off to the side. The move looks precautionary, with Kennedy perhaps receiving a couple maintenance days at the end of camp. Notably, linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. was not working in the pit Thursday.
Chance Hall saw some work at left guard today as Ryan Johnson shifted over to center. Trey Smith look initial reps at left tackle before flipping with Drew Richmond.
-Jesse SimontonWith school in session, the rosters have expanded with lots of new walk-ons now, so Tennessee is practicing with nearly 120 guys. For the first time in camp, we saw scout team jerseys — with lots of scholarship players donning the black shirts. Notables included DL Matthew Butler, WRs Latrell Willams, Maleik Gray and Jacquez Jones, TEs Jacob Warren and Princeton Fant and OL Ollie Lane.
Darrin Kirkland Jr. was running through drills, and while he was taking things a little slowly, Kevin Sherrer praised him once as he ran through a drill after Daniel Bituli and Quart’e Sapp with the inside linebackers.
As a whole, Tennessee’s outside linebacker unit looked fine today, but Rumph was making sure his players weren’t slacking on their fundamentals and on the fine details with just over a week to go before the start of the 2018 season.
f you like what you saw from Daniel Bituli last season, then I have good news for you: He looks like he’s going to be even better this year. I’m impressed with how much he’s increased his explosiveness off the whistle, and he’s become even more athletic and physical.
Jeremy Pruitt worked with the cornerbacks throughout the open portion of practice today.
-Nathanael RutherfordTennessee’s defensive line looks set to be big, fast, and aggressive. Time will tell how the lineup actually fares, but I think the Vols’ coaching staff feels pretty alright with Shy Tuttle, Kyle Phillips, Alexis Johnson, and Emmit Gooden right now.
Ryan Johnson likely would be next in line at center for the Vols, though it doesn't look like anything major is wrong with Kennedy.
Cornerback Kenneth George Jr. rejoined the defensive backs in individual drills on Thursday after working out on the side previously this week.
-Patrick BrownOffensive tackle Marcus Tatum continues to go through drills with his left ankle noticeably taped.
