simontonCouple quick notes from Tennessee's first practice of fall camp... JUCO DL Darel Middleton is massive. Same for Elijah Simmons. The Junkyard Dog is super nimble, too. Trey Smith worked with the first group but avoided almost all contact. Jauan Jennings (knee) was moving fine.
p. brownFreshman Jerrod Means was with the cornerbacks today. Looks like his Instagram hint was real. He's still listed as a wide receiver on the roster we were given before practice, but he's now No. 25 instead of No. 88. We'll ask Pruitt about it after practice, but might be a deal where they want to look at him on defense and go from there. Quavaris Crouch was working with the outside linebackers today. Trey Smith was going through drills but not even doing light contact.
b. mckeeVols junior Deangelo Gibbs, who transferred from Georgia and will redshirt this year, worked at wide receiver during the open portion of practice.

Quavaris Crouch worked mostly with the outside linebackers during the open portion of practice, and Henry To’oto’o and JJ Peterson both worked with the inside linebackers. Jahmir Johnson worked with the offensive tackles during the open portion as well.
I was surprised to see Solon Page III getting as much run with the inside linebackers as he was on the first day. He appeared to be ahead of Shanon Reid and JJ Peterson among others in the unit.
On the defensive line, Emmit Gooden appears to easily be the leader of that group right now. Matthew Butler and LaTrell Bumphus were getting some good work in today to start camp, and I was pleased by what I saw briefly from newcomer Savion Williams.
n. rutherfordKivon Bennett looks to be in great shape and could easily contend with Deandre Johnson for that second outside linebacker spot.
It’s not necessarily an indicator, but from left to right, the first linemen through the drill were Wanya Morris, Trey Smith, Brandon Kennedy, Riley Locklear, and Marcus Tatum. Second through the drill, from left to right, was Jahmir Johnson, Trey Smith, Ryan Johnson, Jerome Carvin, and Nathan Niehaus.
Smith participated in this drill as I noted, but he did not strike a pad like the rest of his teammates.
b. mckeeThere were quite a few balls that hit the ground considering it was routes versus air. Both the wide receivers and quarterbacks were to blame.
Newcomer Jerrod Means indeed called his shot. The freshman posted on social media that he was now a cornerback, and the former wide receiver prospect indeed was in an orange jersey and practiced with the defense on Friday
Another freshman in a different position on Friday was Quavaris Crouch, who was with the outside linebackers. This move doesn't come as much of a surprise, though.
it's worth noting five-star freshman Darnell Wright was among them, getting reps at right tackle. Marcus Tatum and Nathan Niehaus also were getting reps at left tackle.
Fellow five-star freshman Wanya Morris took nearly all of his reps at left tackle, K'Rojhn Calbert looked locked into right guard and Brandon Kennedy was working at his usual center spot
Jahmir Johnson was getting work at both left tackle and left guard, and Jerome Carvin took reps at center and both guard spots. Ryan Johnson and Riley Locklear were moving around, too, but most of their work came at center and right guard, respectively.
Junior college transfer Savion Williams is a broad-shouldered defensive lineman who physically looks capable of holding up at the point of attack. Tennessee needed to add a couple of defensive linemen who were more physically developed than a typical freshman would be, and Williams certainly checks that box.
p. brownFreshman linebacker Henry To'o To'o is another newcomer who physically looks the part. The 6-foot-2, 232-pounder is noticeably thick in the lower body and doesn't really look like a freshman, and he also possesses natural athleticism for the linebacker position and looked smooth going through some of the position drills that had him turning and running and cutting.
Wanya Morris and Jahmir Johnson rotated at left tackle, while Brandon Kennedy and Ryan Johnson did the same at center. At right guard, K’Rojhn Calbert and Jerome Carvin got the most work, with Riley Locklear also involved. Notably, Marcus Tatum took the initial reps at right tackle with freshman Darnell Wright behind him.
Jarrett Guarantano was pretty hot and cold on Day 1, mixing in some fantastic throws with a couple worm-burners and two airmails. The only drop I was by Josh Palmer. Brandon Johnson snagged two nice balls, and Jordan Murphy made one really nice catch on a deep post.
The tight end group is clearly a bigger group, with Dominick Wood-Anderson, sporting pink hair, Sean Brown and Jackson Lowe. Jacob Warren is all of 240 pounds now, too. Fundamentals were a sore spot with the group today
Ty Chandler, Tim Jordan, Jeremy Banks and Eric Gray, in order, all caught the ball extremely well.
Defensively, Darel Middleton and Elijah Simmons would be first round picks on the All-Get-Off-The-Bus Team. Simmons showcased his nimble feet and power during multiple drills.
Redshirt freshman Kingston Harris was with the defensive line and is definitely a guy who has changed his body this offseason. I thought Greg Emerson looked better, too. Senior Emmit Gooden was definitely taking a more assertive leadership role with the unit Friday.
]simontonKevin Sherrer was letting the veterans Daniel Bituli, Shanon Reid and Will Ignont lead the way. During team drills at the end of media viewing, the LB unit consisted of Darrell Taylor and Deandre Johnson on the edges with Bituli and Reid inside. JJ Peterson spent much of the media period standing with his helmet off talking to trainers.
