Jeremy Banks and Roman Harrison were back at Vols practice today, in a limited fashion. - e. cain

Black Jerseys: Jimmy Holiday, Christian Charles, La’Trell Bumphus, Riley Locklear, Len’Neth Whitehead

Not in full pads: Jeremy Banks, Roman Harrison, Donieko Slaughter, Tiyon Evans, Jalin Hyatt

Kwauze Garland and Aaron Beasley leading the LB group. Lots of technical work all around for front-seven.

First group: Kenneth George, Theo Jackson ( looked like nickel), McCollough, Flowers, Taylor...spent a few minutes walking through some things as one big group.

OL:
LT: Calbert/Davis
LG: Harris/Carvin
C: Cooper/Ball
RG: Spraggins/Lampley
RT: Cade/Darnell

The quarterbacks were a touch more inaccurate as a group today and that is likely because of the colder conditions and the wind. I thought Harrison Bailey had his strongest day since we’ve been able to go to practice which was the last three practice days. He threw the ball with a nice touch on several corner routes and seem to be more crisp and getting the ball out of his hands.

The receivers had a couple of drops but nothing to be worried about. Most of the things that I would consider a drop were passes that hit their hands but weren’t great ball placement and passes they were having to extend for.

Interestingly, Harrison was stretching alongside Banks and the rest of the inside linebackers, suggesting the former outside linebacker will be joining Morven Joseph in sliding back a level when he gets back to full health as opposed to joining fellow former outside linebackers Tyler Baron and Bryson Eason in working with the defensive line.

Wide receiver Malachi Wideman and running back Tiyon Evans also continue to be limited in practice, and a new addition to the list of players not practicing is defensive back Doneiko Slaughter, who watched cornerback drills closely while in street clothes.

It's a big group with all the players the Vols have back plus the aforementioned Baron, Eason and junior college transfer Byron Young, and Garner is pushing them all hard, from veterans like Matthew Butler and Greg Emerson to the couple of walk-ons in the group. Garner seems to be trying to get a bunch of big guys to play quicker and thus be more disruptive with as many footwork drills as he's having them do during individual work.

Guys like Kurott Garland and Elijah Simmons are looking quicker in those settings than they have earlier in their careers. The defensive linemen's burst was hit and miss, but one player not lacking in that department is the newcomer Young, who's short-area explosiveness is apparent in such settings. He's also got the kind of long arms you want in an edge rusher and just from the eye-test standpoint looks like he'd be a good pass-rusher.

former walk-on Dayne Davis continues to get a lot of work at left tackle and legitimately might be a factor there. K'Rojhn Calbert, who's likely not 100% with his left ankle heavily taped, is also getting work there and Ollie Lane took some reps there as well on Friday.

Burns was particularly giving newcomer Andison Coby several pointers and had a graduate assistant get up on Coby to simulate press coverage on a couple of his reps.

The Vols are shorthanded at wideout with Hyatt and Wideman limited, and freshman Walker Merrill was absent during the open periods of Friday's practice.

All this enthusiasm about practices is telling. One freakin' page of VN comments about the 5th spring practice? Unless Huepel can and actually does get this turned around on The Hill stick a fork in the UT football program. it's done, nobody will care any longer. Sad sad sad

What do want us to say about it? We are not there to see it. For Qb competition, coaches keeping cards close to vest. LB position of concern, but key guys not available right now. So many reasons to just be patient until more is revealed.
