VOLS position groups ranked against the rest of the SEC

Based off those rankings we are in serious trouble. Im trying to figure out how our Qb position is ranked higher then our LB unit & Secondary. Our secondary is as good as anybody's in the SEC. I would say our front 7 is better then our Qb & Rb positions. TE & WR are about right with so much unknown. Coaching is probably closer to middle of the pack then 10th.

The young man who wrote this has really disappointed since he appeared on the scene a year or so ago.

Not because he sometimes writes negatively about the Vols, but because he is so ill-informed. His journalism is terrible, his sources are non-existent, his writing is sophomoric, and his logic....well, he doesn't appear to have any.

I swear, IF he works hard and gets better at his writing and research, one day maybe, just maybe, he may be as bad a sports journalist as Adams. He might be that dude's equally-hated replacement. But only if he improves a lot. Right now, he's not even close to that.

When you see anything written by this young fella, just pass it on by without a read. You'll be smarter for it.

I am really not sure what to think of these rankings - is it mostly subjective surrounded by opinion? I wasted time reading Mr. Calhoun's thoughts and I believe that I came away more dumbfounded than informed. Our DBs in the middle of the pack when we return everyone but Warrior?? Same with LBs, ILB and OLB, we return all but Daniel B. The same goes with the DL, Taylor is in Seattle . . . OL should be #1 unit across the board . . .

Mr. Calhoun, please please research prior to publishing!

Eh,,just about everything you get about rankings and predictions before the season has started are just opinions to me. Each team and players are different one year to the next to some degree. I dont take any of these seriously.

The author’s ranking methodology appears to be looking at all players at a position expected to play then ranking them using this order and then using that to come up with a total to compare the teams.
1. Returning starter that played well & is old
2. Returning starter that played well & is young
3. Returning backup that played well and will be a starter
4. Returning backups that played well and will still be backups
5. Returning starter that played ok
6. Incoming high ranked freshman or transfer that will start
7. Returning starter or backup that played poorly

Our secondary should be pretty good but we lost an All SEC safety and there are a lot of elite secondaries in the SEC. Our QBs being high is more to do with having 3 guys that played a lot against SEC defenses last year and all looked decent. It’s more likely one of them will improve into a good QB than if we only had JG take snaps and the other 2 remain unknowns. Also there aren’t a ton of good QBs in the SEC this year.

We lost an All SEC safety, our secondary will be worse bc of it. We lost our defensive captain at LB and are hoping a sophomore can replace him. We lost a draft pick on the D line. We aren’t Bama or UGA or even UF where we just reload when a good player leaves.

This year will show if Pruitt can be a great coach as he replaces 3 good starters on the side of the ball he has excelled at coaching.

Every team loses good players every year. If you’ve been recruiting well, like we have, then you can reload. I get losing warrior, bituli, and gooden hurts, but to say our defense will be worse because of it just isn’t true. It could be. But how do you know that some guys haven’t improved, or understand the scheme better this year?

Might as well not play the season. 4-6 or 5-5.

Pruitt has to prove that we are a team that “reloads” instead of “rebuilds” if he wants the benefit of the doubt like Saban and Smart get. If the defense improves this year then writers will see Pruitt as a coach that can turn stars into production.

Gotta remember the national mindset is Butch was a great recruiter and was fired for being a bad game day coach. They think UT still has a lot of his recruited talent. Pruitt has only been able to go 13-12 so that tells them Pruitt isn’t good at developing talent. Until Pruitt proves them wrong he, and the team, will be doubted.

Yep, we already know from his previous stops that at least on defense, he's fully capable of winning with top talent mostly recruited by someone else.

The jury is still out on whether or not he can recruit and develop is own talent.

I honestly do not think there is much value in things like this when they look at programs still building. If Pruitt is succeeding then he'll upgrade everywhere except possibly WR.

It would be interesting to know how these rankings are put together. One guy would struggle to know enough about each team to do it.... and his inherent biases would play in. There's no chance that a group could avoid having different personal standards. Assigning each position group to one evaluator or group of evaluators might work... but that doesn't seem to be what they did here.

Curious to see how much/little difference Osovet and Niedermeyer make in their new coaching positions...if any.

I didn’t think much of Warrior and think the secondary will be better without him.
