Vols pass D

UAB had 23 rushing yards. They also threw the ball over 50 times. The majority of the yards being against a very green secondary and their QB has the talent to be p4 just not the character....to put it lightly. Cuse showed today they're better than what people on this board gave them credit for. UGA is one of the best teams in the country. People need to stop chicken littling.

Syracuse surprised me today for sure. As for our performance, they put a weak opponent away early and got out without more injuries. About as good as one could have hoped. Personally, I can't complain about games like this. Everyone knows what's coming. Really hard to be "up" for every game under the best of circumstances, but to have an opponent like this after a soul crushing loss to UGA so fresh in their minds, I think yesterday was a pretty darned good outcome. Things get serious now tho. I don't expect perfection, but in this league, you'd better come ready to play especially on the road. Any team on our schedule is fully capable of beating us if we don't come in fully engaged. Still say this year is going to come down to one thing....injuries. It's nuts. We can't get play from our QB and injuries aren't a big issue. We get lucky and get a kid who can run this offense and we become a M.A.S.H unit. Such a UT thing.

I said last week after the secondary was burned time and time again that Kitna would probably get 300+, at least 250+! Kitna throwing for 364 yards is totally unacceptable ( even with a lot of the second and third team guys seeing lots of action in the second half )!!! How do all of you feel now after talking about how good Banks and Martinez are against the pass??? Top Tier SEC QBs are going to light up this secondary all year long!!! We better continue to put up 40+ to be in the game vs good SEC teams!!!!
i think the more concerning thing is lack of any pass rush or push, linebackers missing tackles/not getting home on blitzes. combine that with busted coverage, and bad safety play in year 5. it's more than cause for concern.

They’re both great. We have a very good defense.

What's going to happen if we don't get the injured DBs back for a good while....or at all or combination? Just try and out score everyone? Dooley tried that and it didn't work.

I mean there’s some reason for concern don’t get me wrong but some of this is the fans don’t understand what’s going on. We’re going to give up yardage and some points when we get up a lot; we’re just trying to melt time off the clock and get out without injuries in a game like last night

I think it’s actually very shrewd for our coaches to concede a lot of meaningless yards and points in the second half, in exchange for resting our starters and developing our 2nd and 3rd string. Come SEC time, this will pay massive divedends.

Three of our four games so far have been “development games.”

Yall are acting like we’re playing 5 walk ons back there. We are statistically one of the 10 worst secondaries in the country. I would settle for being about the 100th worst.

We are giving up 300 passing yards a game and the talent level is nowhere near that bad.
We played 3-4 string pretty much entire 2nd half everywhere. They had 56 total yards at half. We could have named the score but we opted to play a lot of guys to get experience while UAB stayed with starters to give them some confidence. You’re just looking at the final score and not how the game truly played out. GBO

No one is saying to leave in the starters! UT doesn't have an ELITE D! It never has under Banks! The point is many on this board act like he is a great DC when he continually gets outcoached and gives up tons of points to above average QBs with very good passing games!
This will be the 1st year his defenses degrees.

Well, Heupel had to do it with Hooker and Co. Guess he knows the drill. I think we'll do a lot of zone and make teams go the long way. Problem is that we have no depth in some spots. Over the course of a season, I think it catches up to us. This was my pick for the Heupel stinker and they've got a gritty QB who will find some success against our second and third levels. Unless we can get to him early and create some confusion, we'd better hope the offense brings its A game or Boo and the special teams add some value.
