Vols Over-Ranked

Vol's will earn much sought after respect by winning football games, not through talking head sports anylists.
Go Vol's

That's right.

I think Team 119 should be a legitimate dark horse for the Playoffs. We need a couple of things to go our way (like injuries) but we are back "in the hunt and in the mix".

If Butch is our man, we should be ranked ahead of Arkansas at year's end (and in no way should we lose to them in Neyland this year), and we should be a legit Top #15 team.

If we had a softer schedule, Top #10 for sure. Unfortunately, unlike Ohio State, we do play legit Top #10 teams.

Playoffs? We're talking about playoffs? Playoffs?

....okay with that out of the way lol, let's pump the brakes on playoff talk. We went 7-6 last year with a young team and still have a young team this year. It's going to be a tough road just to go 9-3.

Also, I wouldn't say there is no way we should lose to Arky. They will be very talented this year and some people are even higher on them than us. It will be a dogfight and one great game.

I love seeing the Vols ranked preseason, but it really means squat. IIRC Miss St wasn't ranked preseason last year and made it to number 1. There are other examples as well. Being 25th is about right but it is where you finish that counts.

We should not lose to Arky in Neyland this year.

I say this writer is over ranked.

This guy does not like Tennessee. Last year he continually ranked UT well below teams like Utah State, who they beat handily, and I think he had them a little below below SC, maybe even Arkansas State. Clueless.

Great post but who had UT with the #3 SOS? Sagarin had it at 9...still nothing to sneeze at.

2014 College Football Strength of Schedule - NCAA Method

Here's where I got it from. It's pretty much just the record of opponents with FCS and bowl games excluded.

Edit: I just realized that's the 2014 strength of schedule based on the 2013 record. So those rankings wouldn't mean as much as one based on where the teams finished.

Alabubba was ranked like 22 or 23 to start 2008. Nearly won it all if they could have gotten past UF in the SECCG. They were a little like us that year. Everything looked ready for them, but they had not done a lot to actually prove it on the field. They served notice in Game 1 v top 10 Clemson and nearly ran the table.

I hope we do the same against OU, and then take off to a killer season that sees us with a chance in the SECCG. If injuries are held in check, by December our roster will be very seasoned!

No matter the opinion of being ranked or not. I feel this team needs tof beat Oklahoma and Florida before they deserve a ranking.

Has anyone every kept track of all these pre-season polls and prognostications and then checked to see which ones were correct at the end of the season? I've wanted to do that for a long time but I'm too lazy. It would be interesting to look back at these at the end of the season. Anybody interested or have time?

This should be right up your alley. This compilation of preseason predictions goes all the way back to 1993: Prediction accuracy computations. It provides season-by-season charts as well as cumulative data.

Just being ranked, even at 25, gives us an advantage. The advantage of being on the radar. Starting the season unranked makes it more difficult to break thru and move up. Being 25th allows us to go up a couple spots if we beat BG handily and sets up getting into top 15 if we beat Okahoma. If not ranked, it takes beating OU in week 2 just to crack top 25. My opinion anyway. 25 is just right. Not too much pressure, but our name is scrolling the bottom line on ESPN right now.

With UT's schedule it doesn't matter where they're ranked in a preseason poll. Win the games and the rankings will follow. See Miss St. last season.

So, you are saying we will have 4 losses to:
Oklahoma
Georgia
And, I assume?
Bama
Missouri

That sounds about right to me.
Hope I'm wrong though and we can steal one of those.
