I have watched our games several times at this point, and have watched both FL games as well. After doing that I am less concerned with FL.
They really struggled with UMass QB. He was mobile enough to give them a lot of trouble. Dobbs is far more of a run threat, though probably less of a pass threat. They haven't had to deal with a running back even close to the strength of Hurd yet either.
Florida has a good defense. Tabor, though a classless punk, can play ball. They have decent speed on the edge, but I actually think we can find some success there, which is a good thing since we love the bubble screen and trying to beat the defense to the edge with Kamara. Both UMass and KY had pretty good success at running off tackle. Both were playing with backs that don't hit the hole nearly as hard as Hurd. The main thing about their defense is that it is pretty much untested. They have not seen anything like the speed and power that UT will bring. Sure, we have Oline issues, but we have three HUGE weapons in the backfield. I just think we are going to be hard to contain, even if we do stay primarily one dimensional. To me the only difference between a really run heavy UT and a more mixed attack is the total points scored, mainly due to just fewer plays.
Their Oline is bad. Really bad. The only reason it looks better than ours is that they have faced a pretty vanilla pass rush, and played two team that are so worried about Florida's speed that even their blitz looks hesitant. ASU had a very fast front. VT mixed up the blitz package a lot, with a lot of speed rushers coming on delays. Florida could easily do that as well, but I honestly see them as closer to VT than to ASU. ASU's small, quick, Dline is just not what our Oline is built for. The rest of the team we face will be bigger and slower. We still need a large improvement there, no question.
Del Rio is the real deal. He can sling it. He does still seem to make some poor decisions, and once again, he hasn't faced a good DB or Safety yet. Our secondary could make him look far more average that UMass or KY. He can't run. At all. Same for the rest of the backfield. They are ok. There is not a single great running back on FL's team.
The FL player that impresses me most is their kicker. Kid plays with heart and has one hell of a leg.
Both UT and FL are pretty one dimensional teams from a talent perspective. FL has far more talent through the air, we kill them on the ground. If our secondary holds up, and I think they will, we control the entire game. I don't think they can stop our ground game. We pass just enough to keep the box open, and I don't even think we need to look downfield.
This game will go a lot like Mizzou last year. I don't think it is going to look pretty, but I think it will actually be a pretty commanding UT victory.
We just can't beat ourselves.
Both teams have games that they should win by large margins Saturday. Ohio is definitely more of a threat than North Texas. I wish North Texas had more of a ground game, it would be good to see if another small school could rush on FL.
Two other huge advantages for UT....
1. Neyland is going to be rocking
2. Florida's first road game
28-14 Vols. Game not as close as the score. All rushing TDs for UT, at least one with Dobbs. Ball rarely on UT's side of the 50, FL gets lucky with some blown coverage long balls.
