And yes, I will apologize to Weezer and others for saying that the NCAA had no jurisdiction. After doing some much needed research, I would agree that they basically have full jurisdiction to do whatever the hell they want. That is what the members have signed up for. I still maintain that they overstepped here and will continue to maintain that thought. This has nothing to do with guilt or innocence of PSU and their employee's and former employee's, it has to do with the NCAA needlessly creating havoc and collateral damage where it should not have been created......as is typical of the NCAA.
No apology needed, it's a red button topic and it's bound to draw out emotions.
And I see where you're coming from, but a clear message had to be sent to every member university that this is entirely unacceptable conduct. The punishment is so severe that any coach or AD would have to be crazy to attempt this kind of cover up again. This is hopefully a precedent that will never have to be used again. I get that young people have had their lives turned upside down, but the harm to the university had to be extremely harsh. I do think that all athletes should be granted the opportunity to transfer freely without restrictions to escape the black mark this scandal has left behind.
As to a point you made earlier, other sports will suffer as well, but they will still receive funding. Title IX guarantees the survival of most women's sports. The lack of funding is the biggest reason why I agree other athletes should be given the opportunity to transfer without restriction. While the programs will survive, they won't necessarily have the money to progress their programs. There won't be new facilities or new equipment to help the athletes advance. They should have a choice in whether they accept those conditions.
I'm sorry, but I don't feel the NCAA's actions created unnecessary havoc. Like I said, a message had to be sent, and I believe a clear message was sent. I feel sorry for the student-athletes that are collateral damage, and I feel all of them deserve some course of redress, not just the football players. But I believe the NCAA did the right thing otherwise. You cannot let this go by without harsh punishment.
