I liked Dobbs, great player, smart as all get out. In order for us to be restored to past elite-ness, we have to share the offensive burden. The reason I say this is as good a quarterback we may have with multiple abilities, it could hurt , be a liability, from getting past that hump. Stop the qb you stop the team. Team effort, involvement, got to get away from one player bailing out the team and coaches, as Dobbs did just about every close game last year.
Agree?

ehh.. I don't think Dobbs was the only one making plays but considering hes the QB and has the ball all the time it would seem like that..

Doesn't every team have a star player

A player who can shine when needed

A player who's ability is just better than his teammates .

If our team had a healthy defense, then Dobbs could have been Trent Dilfer and won it all.

If we had a star OL, then our star TE's would get more action and star WRs would get a little more action as well.

If we could get Medley to nail 50+ yarders like he does in practice, that would take a load off of next starting QB.

Something to fix with Team 121.

If a team doesn't have a good QB it will suck!

Agreed. Need to be able to rely on the whole team to do their job. Every unit, every player. Fortunately, Dobbs did dig us out of some holes with his playmaking ability, but as OP mentioned, teams figured out, stop Dobbs (particularly running) stop UT. We need to have other outlets, big time playmakers making big time plays on both sides of the ball, that can step up in the event of one player or unit being off or getting limited by opposing game plans.

That is a position that's hard to make up for bad play. If you can't pass you run the option and do lots of rollouts. If you can pass, you use it to set up the run and then run down their throats.

What relation does it have they our 2016 team had a far superior offense to our 1998 National Championship team? Should this team revert back to that?

What are you basing that statement on?

The 1998 team's lowest scoring game was 17 points against Auburn, and their highest score was 59 points against Kentucky. In 11 regular season games they scored 384 points for an average of 35/ppg.

The 2016 team's lowest scoring games was 10 points against Alabama, and their highest score was 63 against Kentucky. In 12 regular season games they scored 435 points for an average of 36/ppg.

The 1998 team had one less regular season game, and still only had 51 points less than the 2016 team. I don't think I'd go as far to say that 2016 offense was superior to the 1998 offense given those numbers. They did put up more points than the 1998 team, but the 2016 team had one more OOC cupcake game in the TN Tech where they put up 55 points, padding the stats a bit.

So, if we have a more well-rounded team across the board that is balanced in all aspects of the game you think that is better for us? Yes. I agree.

Honestly, Butch was bailed out twice last year by individual players. Would have lost to App State 😐 if it wasn't for Hurd's fumble recovery in the end zone. And of course JJ on the Hail Mary. Our season could/should have been a lot worse than it was.

Those two games in particular, we never really took control of the game. Against GA, we didn't even hold a lead before the hail Mary, except for 2.5 minutes of the last 3.5 minutes of the game when we were up 28-24.

Several games in 2016 came down to lucky breaks more so than superior gameplay/coaching.

Definitely makes one wonder what might have happened without Dobbs. Until we get the OL straight I don't know what else can be done.

And that doesn't count the difference in the game with tempo. More plays equals more yards and more scoring. 98 team controlled the ball. I'd like to see comparison of # of plays and time of possession.

If here were a formula to adjusr, id guess team 120 wouldn't crack the top 10.

Just imagine what Team 120 could have accomplished had the OL stepped up and been dominant. And the defense would have been much stouter without all of those dang injuries. Oh, and the quitter Hurd, well had he not been a quitter . . .

Moral of the story: Every year brings on new questions . . . based upon who left/ graduated/quit/kicked-off . . . new quarterback seemingly every two years or so . . . who steps up in case of injury . . . what Freshman can and will step up . . .

GO VOLS!!!

More than anything, we need coaches to step up their game. Defense last year was crap and the offense either killed it or laid an egg - need more consistency and need to slow down the tempo at appropriate times to rest the D. Hopefully this staff overhaul results in changes for the best.

We also had a running back who gave up on the team and quit. Virus... Hopefully this year, all of our running backs will work as a team and be cohesive both on the field and in the locker room.
