Weatherd and Lambert both believe Jones can get Tennessee back on track despite some first-year bumps and bruises.

"When I first seen Coach Jones, I knew right then that he was the guy that I was going to go to and be a part of," Lambert said. "When I first shook his hand, Coach Jones, he has a tight, firm grip to be small, and I just kind of laughed when I shook his hand. It's kind of shocking to see a coach, that when you first see him, you smile.

"Most coaches, when you see them, you don't smile. You'll be like, 'Hey, how you doing, Coach? How's such-and-such?' With Coach Jones, it's like I really knew him as soon as I met him."

Added Weatherd: "I feel like Coach Jones understands that you need bigger and faster players, smarter players, than what was at Tennessee at that moment. I feel like he has a good plan. I feel like he has the right attitude about it and a great staff that are helping him go through it.

"Hopefully by 2015, we'll be somewhere where nobody else thought we would be."

Weatherd might want to be careful how he phrases his description of the current players. Some of it might be true, but it won't be well received in the locker room.

If he can back it up let him talk, that's what we need some kick azz take names later type of players, this BS picking a guy up after trying to tear his head off I never got that, when you get up step on a finger or ankle, of course not meaning to.:)

Not sure what that has to do with suggesting the current players are small, dumb, and slow. I get what he's saying and it's partly true, but you can think it and not say it.

But we are slow, small, and at times pretty dumb on defense. Have been for at least two years now. I believe the players and certainly the fans knows well what he means.

We need more Al Wilson type driven, nasty players on Offense and Defense and get rid of the Tyler Bray type self absorbed, "whatever" players that are out there now waiting for their NFL careers to be handed to them.

Lol dude his statements where totally true if he did phrase it like that. It needs to be said so these players know that the guys coming in have a different mentality and their goal is to take your job. So either play better or be benched.

I have no problem with what Chris said. He's right and he's calling them out in advance. The existing roster that returns should take it that they can't fake their way to success - other players know if they do it right or have the ability or not. If the incoming guys can see, how much more do the opponents that study the game films? Many on this roster have no recognition ability, anticipation, and football smarts at all.

Why the need to sugarcoat the weaknesses on the current team? It's better that CBJ is honest then firing coordinators and assistants. All the experts on the FF say we need to scheme and adjust and it's Janceks fault. Still waiting to find out what magic scheme is going to get our defense to come off blocks and pass rush better. Oh yeah let's fire ANOTHER coach...not flamin just saying.

^This here. I am waiting for this scheme too! I mean we have ran two totally different schemes in two years and have had the exact same issues.

If our players, hoping to win out the regular season to go 6-6, don't already realize they need help with speed, strength, execution and toughness, I don't know what to say. I doubt they needed Chris Weatherd to tell them that.

I never said his statements were false. But there are enough fans, media, and coaches to remind the current team of their shortcomings without a JUCO guy who has never played an SEC down from popping off. Every player, no matter how mentally challenged you think they are, knows what JUCO guys are brought in for. Did you walk into your current workplace and tell everyone how lazy and incompetent they were? I doubt it.

When Coach Majors took over the Tennessee program, his first statement after meeting the team and evaluating them was "The well has run dry at Tennessee" harsh for those on that team, maybe...but true..... same applies today

It is ALL about competition and bringing it to your teammate. Sure he isn't an official Vol yet...but if he has no competitive fight in him to bring it to the others in his position then I don't want him here! This isn't about worrying about hurting feelings it is about putting the best out on the field at the end of the day.

Also there is no way the current players on the roster don't know that this staff wants more speed and talent on both sides of the ball. Nor can they ignore this is what they are selling to these top rated recruits. What Weatherd said is only what the coaches and media have been saying about Tennessee the last few years.

The players involved in all the losing graduate this year. Not all their fault, plenty of blame to go around. :twocents:

He also said " I would have turned a lot of these guys down on their looks".
