UT position previews: Offensive line GoVolsXtra
First you may want to read this. Before I read this story I have been discussing my contention that TN wins at least 8 games this year and has a better chance than UGA of beating Florida. I hope you laughed a little bit, because that is how I want everyone to feel coming into September 19. What that game reminds me of is the 1998 UGA game when Tennessee had lost Jamal Lewis to a torn ACL against Auburn. The College Gameday crew said that the question after UGA beat LSU is who should win the Heisman, Champ Bailey or Quincy Carter. There was no question in anyones mind that UGA would slaughter the TN team that went out and beat them 22-3.
Last year Fulmer was fired because he hired Clawsen and told him to put in his offense. Clawsen attempted to get players to learn the greatest hits from his offensive system and it failed. A large part of the failure was that he had a complicated system for his offensive linemen that involved switching sides of the field, and basically stunting as o linemen. This worked great at Richmond where he had smart linemen who weighed 250 and who enjoyed learning lots of plays and pre snap adjustments but at TN it just made people confused and timid enough to completely and utterly suck. The run blocking was pathetic, you knew they would not get a 3rd and 1 and the pass blocking was awful as well.
The new zone blocking is so easy it allows for maximum aggresiveness. When the ball is snapped, blast the guy in front of you.
Also Bryce Brown will be compared to Maurice Clarett before the season is over. Unlike Jamal Lewis freshman year when Fulmer would not play him against Florida because he did not know all the blitz pickups, Kiffin will have him in the game.
Oh I get so happy thinking about it, from playing Hawaii and Miami to now Charleston and Troy...Kiffin will have them so fired up they will be jumping out of the Swamp before kickoff.
This is the email you should quote with attribution in November. TN will make some noise when it crushes UCLA but it could also very well grind out long possessions on offense in Gainesville by running a platoon of Hardesty, Poole and Brown (maybe Oku but I doubt it). That will also allow a defense that did pretty darn well despite having no help from the offense last season to succeed. 243 yards is how many Florida had last year in Knoxville. They also played with no mistakes. Eric Berry will make them make a mistake this year. Finally Nu'Keese is going to make a play. He is like Tennessee's own Harvin.
Our offensive line play will be night and day different. Tennessee will absolutely cruise past Vanderbilt, Kentucky and South Carolina. Tennessee could lose to Alabama and Georgia and will probably lose to Florida but it will be a close game and I am feeling great about an upset.
Kiffin gets TN to 8-9 wins plus a bowl victory and his recruiting class will be top 5 from here on out. USC east will have arrived.
Berry returns a pick six off Tebow and TN beats UF in the Swamp? Berry will win the Heisman and have as great an NFL career as Woodson.
Hope you enjoyed the email. We all get to dream at this time of year, but I feel like mine could be reality.
