All the Retirement Rick posters need to be banned from TBA. Pull for Vol hoops or go away!

Here's a timeline of how the "Retirement Rick" geniuses on VN.com have graced Barnes tenure here ...

Phase 1: Barnes Hired
-> Retirement Rick swamp creatures crawl all over these boards condemning the hire. The guy is obviously elderly not energetic and coasting back near his wife's home town in order to have family nearby to get him in a nursing facility shortly. They can't believe we didn't pony up the $$$ for a decent coach like Steve Kerr or Coach K, you know basic hires for BB Blue Blood like UT. VN.com is abuzz with a liberal sprinkling of Retirement Rick in every BB thread.

Phase 2: Barnes Slow to Recruit for 2-3 years
-> As expected, mediocre on court results followed by multiple low-star recruiting classes leaves us high and dry with scrubs like Jordan Bone, Grant Williams, and Admiral Schofield eating schollys. The Retirement Rick crowd is gathering the pitchforks. After all this is UTBB and we deserve Popovich or at least Phil Jackson. Barnes is heavily invested in Geritol Inc and the rails into a North Carolina nursing facility are greased and ready. The legions of the miserable are nearly convinced enough to light their torches. VN.com can't get thru 3 BB posts without a Retirement Rick troll spewing bitterness on everyone in ear shot.

Phase 3: Geritol Rick Backs into an SEC Title -> Whaaaaaaat? The pitchforks are in hand and torches soaked in kerosene, but Retirement Rick somehow takes his 3* scrubs and backs into an SEC Title, knocks off a #1, spanks UK twice, and makes a Sweet 16 run! Nodded off for naps a few times on the bench too. It takes the entire season, but the Legions of the Miserable put down the torches and pitchforks at least temporarily. VN.com only has a small sprinkling of RR references mainly as a pre-planned backup for when we crash back into reality the next season. A handful begin to pick up the Reverend Rick mantra and leave it's droppings on VN.com as a backup to demean the coach until we get back to losing soon.

Phase 4: Retirement Rick Backs into #1
-> This year there are no RR references at all. The Legions of the Miserable have blended quietly back into the fabric of the fanbase and nary a soul knows that they spent 2+ years ranting on the man who would lead our Vols to the #1 Ranking for over an entire month as a historical first, knock of the Mildcats twice, and make another S16 run. Plus Retirement Rick slept his way thru recruiting but a 5* and 4* player signed anyway out of sheer pity for the old man. Retirement Rick is unheard of all year, and only Reverend Rick references sprinkle the most brazen from the Legion.

Phase 5: Fulmer Ponies up too much Coin -> After the unfathomable on-court run, Phil Fulmer flips the script and does what the Legions of the Miserable have begged for decades to get ... Pony up $$$ for an elite coach. But, this VN group of budding GMs, ADs, and CPAs, find fault in that it is TOO much $$$. Since they personally pay the UTADs bills, they feel compelled go full on with snowflake style tantrums because the Reverend actually thought he deserved to be paid when blue blood programs were throwing stacks of cash at him. Reverend Rick got a renaissance and more than a few ranted and raved about the preacher who is so hypocritical that he expected to be paid market price for his services and didn't just donate his time to UT like it was the Boys Club down by the retirement center. Nevermind that they've trashed every AD since Davy Crockett for being cheap. Reverend Rick demanded their respect because he got paid when they were more accustomed to keeping their own preachers back home poor, stuck in the parsonage, and under their control. RevRick lived on for quiet some time around here that year to help appease the Legions own sins during the rebuilding season.

Phase 6: But, Teenagers are Smarter than some Adults -> In a rebuild year, Rev Rick not only does some serious roster upgrades in-season, puts 3 in the NBA Draft, accomplishes tremendous player development, smacks UK straight in the mouth in Rupp, goes about landing what may become the greatest recruiting class in the history of UTBB, and has our team deep and poised for a deep NCAA run. 5*/4* teenagers are a lot smarter than some adults around here! It's making it incredibly embarrassing to even utter Reverend Rick right now. Not to mention that the Legions of the Miserable have buried Retirement Rick so far in the ground that it is nowhere to be uttered! But fear not, the Legion is just laying dormant like a hibernating bear. They are bandwaggoned up and posting happily along side you today on VN.com. But rest assured, they are Sleeper Cells of joy terrorists. At the first upset loss, problem on the horizon, or anything less than an eternal string of natties, the Legions of the Miserable shall return bearing an unbearable dose of Retirement Ricks, Reverend Ricks topped with a flood of "I told you so".

Enjoy the run while ya can!

Wow listen to how intelligent he sounds!...Good work ethic is gonna make that kid a star in life and on the court...Welcome to Big Orange country!
That's bc he's an incoming college student. Interview your 'average' person on the street and they sound like marble mouth garbage. Tired of hearing this cliche.

Little heavy handed...but understandable with the backdrop of memory.

Before putting him on a pedastal (sp?), maybe we should see if he can get a team into the E8. He couldn't do it with 3 NBA players, let's see if he can do it now with 5*'s.

Yeah, Tennessee basketball is so used to making that E8 all the time. We should definitely make it every year...

It was, but as you said, understandable. I would also add Phase 0, or perhaps edit Phase 1 to state that many of the Retirement Rick posters initiated that moniker because CRB wasn't raking in Kevin Durant and DJ Augustin immediately upon arrival. Instead, he was "settling" for guys like Kyle Alexander, Admiral Schofield, Grant Williams, et al.

Hopefully a big man of or a good center will see what's going on here and join in. They are the only ones we have hard times recruiting and I wonder why is it there are not committing knowing good and well with guards and small forwards recruits we have would put us of the top

I think it was fair for people to question the Rick Barnes hire at the time given that Texas was firing him due to not meeting their expectations.
I also think its fair for folks to point out he has been a big success at Tennessee and raised our program to a level we have not reached both in recruiting and the number one ranking we achieved for much of the season prior to last.
I also think it is fair for folks to point out his lack of success overall in the NCAA tourney. Given the players he has had and regular season success, I think it is fair to say he has underachieved overall in the tourney. For some fans the tourney is how they measure their seasons success.

I questioned the hire, because it happened so quickly, and because I wondered how close he was to retirement. My expectations were lots of really good recruits, but less than stellar coaching. What we got at first was just the opposite. Of course, some the lower rated recruits became NBA players, but I will chalk that up to a great strength and conditioning program, and great coaching.

At this point, all I can say is that it was all worth the wait. CRB has added the recruits now, and all the pieces are in place. There are no guarantees of success, but at least now we have a really good chance.
