There are certain parts you avoid, just like every other, town, city in the world. The majority is quite lovely and I would put it up there with the best the U.S. Has to offer. I've been all over this land and have a large sample size to compare.
I don't think Memphis is great, or horrible. As with any city of size, it'll have its good parts and its bad parts. However, and this is important for Memphis residents to comprehend, you have a crime problem.
You can compare your city to other cities all you want. You can show pictures of the tourist areas all you want, but you have a crime problem and a perception problem.
As of 2012, you were ranked the 5th most dangerous city in the United states, only slightly more safe than Detroit and Compton. That's not a perception problem, it's cold, hard facts that promote your perception problem. Someone said earlier that they don't care much for anecdotes. Well, the plural for 'anecdote' is 'statistics'.
Your problem is not nameless people on a website spreading baseless rumors. Your problem is the fact that your city is the 5th most dangerous city in the US to live, according to the FBI.
