Vols in Taxslayer Bowl - OFFICIALLY

Think about the team. Instead of Memphis or Nashville or Shreveport or Birmingham or Charlotte they get to spend New Years in Florida. Nothing wrong with those cities, but as a bowl destination, this is a home run for this team given the circumstances.

yep, just watch the video of the team's reaction. It says it all.

Butch Jones 61-40 (1-2 bowl)

One of the dumbest bowl names I've ever heard--and there have been some bad ones! But a good destination and good matchup! Go Vols!

I'll take it but this one came out of left field. All week I only saw one vague mention of the Gator being a possible destination for the Vols. Everything up to the last minute was Liberty, MCB, Belk.

Also interesting how this comes full circle. In the early to mid 2000's we have better teams than this one, but since we were so used to going to BCS and New Years Day caliber bowls we often got shafted when we had 8-9 win teams. Bowls knew VOL fans would be disappointed and not want to travel so several times we ended up with a worse bowl than we deserved.

Now that we are hungry again, we're getting a better bowl than a 6-6 team should get. I'll gladly take it. Tired of seeing it UF have their safety net over the years when they should've ended up in the MCB or worse.

I was stunned when I saw the Vols in the Gator Bowl. Very happy for the team. Now, I have to figure how I can get down there for the game

We are spending the week of New Years at Folly Beach. Its just 3.5 hours to Jax from there. I'm in.

These insignicant bowl games after Jan 1 have got to stop. It is absurd.

Agreed. I hated it years ago when they started shoving extra bowl games onto New Years Day. And then it was even worse having mid-low end bowls between New Years and the National Championship game.

The bowl season used to work it's way up from the low end pre-Christmas bowls to the better mid level games as we went from Christmas to New Years Eve culminating the the elite bowls on New Years. The last 20 years have been a gradual lower of the prestige of playing on New Years. 6-6 teams playing on New Years or later just seems on par with giving everyone a trophy.

In the end though it's all about money, even down the selection process and naming of bowls. At least we do finally have a playoff but I wish the rest would change.

As an alum of both institutions, I'll be rooting for the Vols to pull out a close one and not embarrass the Hawkeyes too bad!

This will be a dogfight for real, though. Coach Ferentz will have his guys ready. Really excited to see how the Vols handle this challenge.

If I told you back in the Spring that the Vols would be playing a game in January, would any of you have said this season would be a disappointing one?

Mission accomplished, Vols!

I'm glad we ended up with the Gator bowl but I measure our team based on it's record and accomplishments. We are the same team now as we were yesterday when we all thought we'd be going to the Liberty bowl on a Monday afternoon in late December.

Getting picked for a better bowl in a better site isn't changing anything about this team. Even the bottom tier Birmingham bowl which ended up with the 2nd to last pick in the SEC is played on Jan. 3rd. The 6 win Gators are still the same crappy team today as they were yesterday despite suddenly being a "January bowl" team.

This just goes back to the point about over-satuating New Years and beyond with so many mediocre to lower tier bowls. Suddenly all these mediocre teams are hanging their hat on playing on New Years or later.

I am relieved it's not the Liberty Bowl, if for no other reason than scheduling time off to be home to watch. A more prestigious bowl and a lot better time slot, IMO.

if for no other reason than I wont get stabbed.

There, fixed your post.

I know. I'm not afraid of someone with a knife or even a gun and I feel I could take on two or three at a time if I had to.

I've had a house in Memphis for nearly 20 years, and still spend half of my time there. Never had a problem. And I'm willing to bet you never have either-but don't let that stop you from running your #$#@ sucker.
