Vols Hire Darin Hinshaw per Drew Edwards

From UT sports:

Hinshaw, 37, was a record-setting quarterback during his collegiate playing days and spent the last three seasons as wide receivers coach at Memphis on the staff of Tommy West. His two star pupils -- Duke Calhoun and Carlos Singleton -- ended their Memphis careers in 2009 as the top two wideouts in school history.
Calhoun finished with school records of 212 receptions and 2,981 yards, while adding 19 TDs to tie for second all-time in Tigers history in that category. Singleton's 22 career touchdowns are a Memphis record and his 164 career receptions for 2,365 yards both are second on the U of M charts behind Calhoun.
Hinshaw joined the Memphis staff after serving one season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Georgia Southern under former head coach Brian VanGorder. In 2006, Georgia Southern ranked 27th nationally in total offense, averaging 359.9 yards per game.
Prior to his brief Georgia Southern stint, Hinshaw worked at Middle Tennessee for five seasons. He was the running backs coach his first two seasons before being elevated to co-offensive coordinator in February 2003.
Under Hinshaw's guidance, the MTSU offense consistently led the Sun Belt Conference and was among the nation's statistical leaders. A highlight was in 2003, when the Blue Raiders offense was the highest scoring unit in the league at 27.7 points a contest, including four games of 35 points or more.

Apparently the concept of having a mind and being able to choose whether or not you accept this hire or not is foreign to you. I can still love my team and not like the coach. I did it when Fulmer was here for years, no big deal. Your analogy of the glass half full concept is totally incorrect. I just choose to see things for what they are instead of crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. I believe that is called a realist. I can assure you my 16 yr old who is all AP classes, straight A student is very capable of making a decision based on facts.

it's not lost on me, after all the crap I took, going off on Clawful

I guess it's too much to expect him to bring a better staff
just like it was too much to expect Hamilton to make a better hire

After reading his bio, I don't think the hire is that bad. He hasn't coached at a lot big colleges, and that gives people pause, but he was an accomplished at central florida at QB, and has been an OC at MTSU.

they could put alot of us at ease

just beat Oregon on the road, and come in a win a big home game against the Gators

Go Vols

First time posting on here but I thought I would lend some insight on the Hinshaw hire. Darin is a friend of mine and a great coach. He will certainly do the VOL nation proud! He has a great offensive mind and will be a great addition to this staff. He had some other chances to leave Memphis but was happy with his situation there. Everyone must remember as well it's not always easy to pick up and move a family of five every 2 years. I will try to speak with Darin after signing day and get some insight of how things are going.
Go Vols!

Some of you guys need to chill. The guy will probably end up coaching quarterbacks. It's not like he's running the entire offense! So, I say, give him a chance, Dooley saw something in him. He is just an assistant coach. Maybe he won't be so bad.

Go Vols and Go Colts!

A couple good years here and people will be climbing the walls if he gets an offer from some other team.

Ok, so CDH has coached WR's, RB's and QB's while being a former QB in college. Does anyone know what positin he'll be coaching here? CCB is WR/Ass.HC, so that leaves the RB and QB positions still unfilled. Also, will CER just coach ST's or will he be a position coach as well?

After reading some more about Hinson, his bio is pretty good:

American Chronicle | Garza gone, Hinshaw hired at UT

I agree. This guy was a record-setting QB at his school, coached the best two receivers every to play at their school (Memphis), and was co-OC at MTSU during a time that they were leading their conference in offense. Also has an MBA, so he's likely relatively smart. Now, I'm not all that familiar with previous QB coach Reaves bio, but I doubt seriously that it is 'better'.

For everyone who only wants hire Sportcenter coaches from big-name schools, remember - Saban started as a GA at Kent State. Anybody want to stand up and say he shouldn't have ever been hired anywhere else due to that humble start? I'd be willing to bet that he was a pretty good coach long before his was a household name and most great coaches start that way. Just an example.

I'll trust a guy who's evaluated him and interviewed him over someone who mostly knows that MTSU and Memphis aren't national powerhouses. Does the fact that Memphis isn't very good mean that Deangelo Williams can't play?

it is true that some coaches have translated success at a lower level into success at a higher level. Many of those, however, are at schools that breed success by their recruiting prowess. But, as eric said, not winning a nc at a lower level (la. Tech wouldn't be a nc with saban, meyer and miles on staff) does not mean they will fail at a higher level, especially when you consider the resources we as a program provide access to. Look at mack brown's first few years as a hc.
1- appy st - 6-5
2- tulane - 1-10
3- tulane - 4-7
4- tulane - 6-6
his 1st 3 yr stint he went 11-23, yet nc hired him with a head coaching record of 17-28.
5- nc - 1-10
6- nc - 1-10
7- nc - 6-4-1
8- nc - 7-4
his first 8 years as a head coach generated a record of 32-56-1. By the time texas hired him in 1998, his overall record was 40-35-1. His record at texas is 128-27. Success or failure at one school does not guarantee sucess or failure at another. Yes, this is just one example. I can find more. You can find more to dispute it, but it doesn't matter. Our coach is not spurrier, meyer, our last coach, saban, brown, zook, fulmer, cutcliffe, edsall, whittingham, stoops, carrol, miles, richt, bowden, or whoever else it is that any of us may have wanted, endorsed, or expected. Our coach is derek dooley and he is now coaching the university of tennessee volunteers, the one thing that most everyone on here has a deep, undying love for. Regardless of whether you think this was a good, bad, great, or mediocre hire does not in the least matter anymore. All that matters is he is what we have and what we should support in any way possible at least for 2-3 years. If at that point, he hasn't given us a reason for excitement and hope, then we can come on here and bash him like some already are.

great example!!

This guy isn't a recruiting weapon... in my opinion this is so far the worst hire Dooley has made. I will give it a chance... maybe he is really something with X's and O's, but this one screams desperate to me.

I have liked all his other moves and who he is targeting, but this one is a stretch at best. At least he has ties to Florida although not for recruiting purposes.

:eek:lol: SBV's as good as it gets, and even he misses every once in a while. Glad this guy is a recruiting weapon.

Hope Hinshaw does a better job with WR than QBs.
wait what? he did a bad job with QB's? Worley did better than anyone with sense should have expected given the situation he was put in and so did Simms given his talent level. I think this is the first complaint I have seen about QB coaching on this staff.

Every QB came in and looked prepared. Any problems in performance were ability based. Worley was a freshman who should have been redshirted and Simms was well Simms his performance against the defenses he played against came as a surprise to no one and realistically cannot be looked on as failures as he played exactly to his level of talent maybe a bit above.

Then you haven't been around long enough. Since he has been WRs coach at his two previous jobs it didn't really make a lot of sense when he came in as QB coach.

Hinshaw was a collegiate QB and has coached virtually every offensive position. Funny reading the village idiots criticizing Hinshaw without knowing anything about him.
