Vols Hire Darin Hinshaw per Drew Edwards

Bicknell left UNH in 1997 to serve as the offensive line coach for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. When head coach Gary Crowton left to become the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator in 1999, Bicknell was promoted to replace him. In his first season as head coach, he led the Bulldogs to an 8-3 record, the school's first AP Top 25 ranking, and a 29-28 upset win over eventual SEC champion Alabama. In 2001, Louisiana Tech won the Western Athletic Conference championship during its first year of membership, earning Bicknell conference Coach of the Year honors. Louisiana Tech played Clemson in the Crucial.com Humanitarian Bowl, the program's first postseason appearance since 1990. During his tenure at Louisiana Tech, Bicknell's teams defeated national powers Alabama, Michigan State and Oklahoma State. 22 of his players were either drafted by or signed free agent contracts with National Football League teams. Bicknell was fired on December 4, 2006 after a 3-10 season.

In Bicknell last 3 yrs as HC his record was 2004 6-6, 2005 7-4, 2006 3-10 for a combined 16-20 overall. Bicknell was replaced with Derek Dooley who went 2007 5-7, 2008 8-5, 2009 4-8 for a combined 17-20 record. Derek Dooley recorded 1 somewhat signature win when his team defeated Miss St in 2008 22-14. That Miss St team record in 2008 was 4-8 and Sylvester Croom was fired after that season and replaced with Dan Mullen.

In 2000 Dooley was hired by Nick Saban as recruiting coordinator/tight ends coach, a position he held for 2 seasons. The third and fourth seasons with Nick Saban he was demoted from recruiting coordinator to running back/special teams coach.

This is the coaching resume of the new HC for the Vols, Mike Hamilton should be fired and ran out of town for paying this guy 2 million a year to be our coach. If you are in the camp of Dooley just because he is the new HC, that just doesn't make sense. This guy has done nothing to prove he was even worthy to be considered as a HC in this league. Some may say his coaching record was better then CLK, but with CLK you knew he was bringing great assistants that made up for his lack of HC experience.

People want to question my fanhood, that is absurd. I will always support the players who represent my hometown. That does not mean I have to support the HC and the AD who made this hire. I can't speak for anyone other then myself, but I have every right to voice my displeasure and still remain a Vol fan. In my opinion those that have jumped on the Dooley bus just because he is the new HC, is beyond my realm of reasoning. Those that have jumped on the Dooley bus because of his coaching pedigree, have me totally baffled. Do I wish for failure for the new HC? absolutlely not, I have to much love for my team to wish that. But I totally disagree with this hire, and the 2 best coaches on this team right now are the 2 hired from the former regime. To me that speaks volumes.

Gman...that is the best post of 2010 so far....My sentiments exactly..

I will support DD and whomever he brings onboard. I will support this team as well. My point in being disappointed in this hire though is that DD has to recruit against Saban, Meyer, Miles, Richt, Mullen, Chizik, and that idiot at Arkansas who's name escapes me at the moment. It was hard enough for Kiffin WITH an all star cast, to recruit against these guys, and the question is this......how hard is it going to be for a virutally unknown with the same kind of staff? Think back to when you were a kid. The things that grabbed your attention were Corvettes, not Impalas, and were infatuated with the cheerleaders, not the wall flower girls. They are young and impressionable, and they all want to be winners. I do wish CDD all the success in the world, I'm just not so sure itll happen.

People are so mad about Darin Hinshaw but I wonder how many of those people had ever heard of Willie Mack Garza, James Cregg or David Reaves before they came here? I'm sure some knew about Reaves, being at South Carolina as their QB coach which everyone knows that Spurrier coaches his own QB's, so what does that say about him?

Darin Hinshaw might be this staff's "weakest link", who knows, but don't pretend like the last staff was an all-star lineup already before they got here.

The last staff had better timing and some luck to go with it. They had Gran fall in their lap because of the Auburn turnover, again due to proper timing, they had Thompson dying to get out of Alabama for personal reasons, again the timing was right. Chaney knew the ship was sinking in St. Louis, another situation of timing and luck to have him available.

Do some of you not realize it's almost unofficially the dead period of coaching changes? The coaches that planned to move have already done so, Kiffin put this team in a bad situation by leaving when he did.

I'm not sure what is so hard to understand about the timing. Tennessee was put in a bad spot and it's nearly impossible to get coaches to make lateral moves 2 weeks before signing day. Dooley tried to get Steele and Smart so it's not like he is intentionally trying to fill the staff with coaches no one has heard of.

I believe Tennessee might be the only team in college football that has to play Alabama and Florida every year. As much as we love the Vols, that is not very attractive to a lot of coaches.

If team Chemistry had a mathematical or other substantive formula It would be easier to predict a Coaches future contributions. As it stands what a relatively unknown coach has accomplished in the past or at certain times in their career is no indicator to future successes or failures. I find solace that Coach Chaney has the necessary skills to make any Coach having anything to do with the offense a better, more developed and certainly more knowledgeable X's and O's and tecnique's Coach.

Don't expect much of a response.....some folks don't like logic and facts.

(Nice post though.)

I see the armchair AD's are out in full force in this thread. I haven't read the whole thread, but the simple fact that you guys think that every big name coach should be interested in UT is laughable at best. Not only that, but, to think that a coach can't be successful based on where they coached previously is was is asinine. Every coach, for the most part, started out small and worked their way up. Go look at most every coaching bio out there for a big name coach and see that you obviously have no clue what it takes or what to consider when hiring someone to coach a major D-1 BCS level football team. Most of them started out small and worked their way up. Hell, perfect example, Jim Tressel. Who though he would win a NC when he went to Ohio State from Youngstown State?? Like I said, most of you have no clue what it takes to be a coach at this level. Neither do I really, but I am smart enough to understand that it's not all about the name either.

Good post....afraid it is falling on "emotional" ears.

Knox News says he has been hired as Wide Receivers coach... they must never fact check or do any really journalism ever...

Hinshaw named to UT coaching staff GoVolsXtra

Where did they say that? I haven't seen anything that says what he'll coach at UT.

Anyway, I'm with DD - every assistant coach can't be a household-name superstar. It looks like this guy has done good things everywhere he's been. I trust Dooley's judgment more than all of the casual fans who are just wanting to hear a name that they've heard before on Sportscenter...:p

Decent hire to me. People need to chill and give it a year, that's what I'm doing. If next years class isn't a top 10 to top 5 class and the play on the field does not look great then I say bad hire as far double D. No way to know yet.

He won 4 NC's at YSU. It wasn't beyond the realm of possibility.

Hinshaw = great hire

1. better QB coach than Reeves
2. recruits FL, was a star at UCF
3. recruits West TN, where we need help
4. looks like a very likeable guy, unlike tool-box Reeves

At this point, we have 7 out of 10 coaches, we only need 3 more........ I'm sure we will have a few more soon enough......

I suppose ole Doofus Dooley is making UT the laughing stock of the conference.. We go from an all star staff that other schools envied to this? We had a staff that top notch recruits wanted to play for to the poster school of no names and lame. I know the DD gang are going to say I am not a fan blah blah. I have been a Vol fan for over 40 yrs and this hire has been horrible. The only bright spots on this staff are Cheney and Thompson whom the previous coach hired. All you Dooley supporters need to open your eyes. This is going to be a train wreck and us fans will be the ones paying for it. The AD and coaches are getting paid, and we are left with heartache to show for it.

well if Kiffin hadnt left us we would be in great shape. But Dooley is given a job and he has to fix what Kif messed up.

Yeah i think Dooley and the rest of his staff have been a little busy trying to recurit with only two weeks when he got the job. Kif always stated that he did a great job and only had three months/ well Dooley had two weeks.

I didn't realize Dooley got demoted from recruiting coordinator under Saban. That was one of his big selling points to the kool-aid drinkers, his ability to recruit.

He was in charge of the 2001 class #1 i belive. I don't think they demoted him.
