This is a hell of a stat. (BEST IN THE NATION).

1. Did we lose any O line?

2. With Cromp being a lot more mobile than Ainge, if the line does just as good how much does this aid Cromp?

3. Vols, I must say I think we are a sleeper this year.

I think him being mobile might make him more prone to get sacked, if that makes sense. He will run into a few.

I think this is a very important stat for Cromp's confidence. For a first year QB to have the confidence to stand in the pocket and make big throws is huge. It should help him to not try to do to much with his feet.

Our o line was a bit overrated IMO.
Ainge just had a really quick release.

i hear that alot and don't buy it. the quick release helped, yes. but 4 sacks given up all year is hard to overlook without mentioning the pass protection.

ainge was really scared to get hit.

you know the greatest thing about this statement? Crompton isn't. and that makes me happy. I'm definitely ready to see a hard nosed qb take over the reigns. no offense, EA. It's just that there's nothing like the southeast.

Agree, but I don't like to see him take on the LSU LB corps like he did in 06. Not afraid to get hit is one thing...seeking contact is another. Just slide there.

NOW, trucking DBs is a different matter altogether, since he was a S in HS and is a pretty big boy.

I agree. No one found a target as quick as Ainge. Although I believe the coaches ran the offense with the intent of getting rid of the ball very quickly to avoid the sack. I believe the quick passes were exactly what the coaches wanted. I think that had a large part in our lack of downfield passing.

I wouldn't necessarily blame Ainge or say he was scared. Although Fulmer said he had a shoulder injury most of the season that was probably more hampering than his broken finger. So that may have had something to do with the coach's decision.

Ainge was quick to release but also quick to throw away. Our oline still did a great job to protect him none the less but what our oline needs to learn to do is runblock. They got knocked off the ball nearly every game last year.

Eric Young started 5 or 6 games and got hurt. He's gone but Chris Scott filled in well.

Crompton will probably get sacked more than Ainge

Most of his passes were released in three seconds or less. All you have to do is get in a defensive players way and the end result is very few sacks. It is a fact although not necessarily indicative of our O-line.

if only they offered this protection in the first series vs CAL, that blind side hit + perfect bounce , along with the block n backs on PR cost us that game

3 seconds would have been an eternity for Ainge.

Ainge had a quick release and was told to not get hit -- that was a Cutcliffe philosophy. This definitely padded our stats. Also, we failed to run the ball well last year and didn't throw deep. The best D against that is play the intermediate pass tight to prevent first downs. Blitzing becomes less successful with quick passes so the D's didn't blitz as much (this is a guess, I don't have stats on that). Regardless, this doesn't make our O line bad -- just maybe not as good as stats say. Think of it this way - -Ainge has some of the best stats in UT history, but you won't find his name being announced among the Top 5 QB's this weekend. Stats aren't everything, there are lots of factors to consider. The most important being Clawson is making some serious O line adjustments this year so last year may have little indictation of this years results. I remain optimistic though.

Ainge did have a quick release but his release was really quick when he was about to get hit. Crompton will get several more sacks because he is mobile, and will scramble out of the pocket from time to time.

It's easy to get rid of the ball when all you're doing is throwing slants and checkdowns.

Exactly. Thus proving even further that the O line stats may not be indicative of true ability. D's had no time to get to Ainge whether it be quick release, pass route, or bad running play.
