Vols get new commit from GA DE Roman Harrison

I think there's overt desperation that this HAS to be the right hire on the part of many fans/posters. We now have a funnel of abstraction for rationalizing recruiting.
If they have stars, we're taking it to the big boys. If they don't have stars, they're underrated and you have to look at the offer list. If they don't have stars or a strong offer list, you have to look at the measurables. If they don't have stars, a strong offer list, or off the chart measureables, then they are a true diamond in the rough that only our staff has the ability to identify.

Some truth here.
But come on. The classes aren't complete and we're 2nd in the East per player. Yes, the team that played for the NC last yr is ahead of our coach, that hasn't coached 1 game yet. Aren't the Bama and UGA standards a bit high until he plays a single game?

I don't buy into the "4 or 5 years" bs but seriously, is giving the recruits the chance to see him actually coach really asking too much?
NM, I've read the responses, it obviously is for some.

Bottom line is we gotta win this fall. If so we land some big time recruits. If not we keep getting "diamonds in the rough"

Not sure why people are dissing this kid. Dude would play like a 5 Star with our coaching. It’s alot better to coach up natural talent, than lack the talent to coach.

a position of need for the 3-4...he'll work out just fine...has speed and good size, in which he'll hit the weight room and put on a few more pounds, and he's coachable...possibly even get another star...also, if Michigan State wanted him, that makes it even better...:)

GO VOLS!

Hillbilly embarrasses both names in his handle. In the next two-three years, he ill realize that he will need to change his handle to troll the Tennessee Vols.

Do you guys even know how the star rating system works? Please look it up.

If you don't camp, you don't get offered. If I was coaching, I would trust my evaluation rather than those who watch a few films and anoint someone to be the next HT winner. At camp, one can ask the player to perform a certain task-move- and see how he adjusts to suggestions to improve. One can do his own timing, strength, agility, etc. I like the fact that Pruitt wants a kid to camp at Tennessee if he is rated a 4 or 3 * player by the rating services. There is one service that will rate a kid a 4-5 star if he is being recruited by UGa, regardless of his ability.

Lord, hear my prayer. Let our coaching staff recognize and develop talent. Let the stars in the night sky shine upon our Volunteers' victories on the field. Your stars, oh Lord. Amen, and pass the cornbread, please.

agreed. i think the thing fans are anxious about is that with the coaching change, that 2-3 year clock starts over.

and for fans, that clock has been ticking for 10 years already.

hard to reconcile that. another bad year even in CJP's 1st year is....just another bad year for us.

hence the sense of urgency about everything...gotta win 7 or 8 this year, gotta sign a top 5 class this year, gotta do this or that....this year.

i think most realize, rationally, that's probably not realistic.

it's still going to suck to watch us win 5, 6, 7 games and know that may just be ceiling right now. and that, really, 7 and 5 would be really good all things considered.

37 NFL Pro Bowl Players Were 3-Star Recruits (or Worse) - HERO Sports

“The biggest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, it’s the illusion of knowledge.”

Neat. What % of 3 stars actually become Pro Bowlers? .01% maybe? What % become solid SEC contributors? Higher obviously. It’s still more of a gamble than a 4 star.

It’s sad that we have to explain why each recruit is a great take. No one wants to knock a players potential, but at the same time we know we have to recruit at a certain level if we are ever to be relevant again.

So all of the 203 4-5* players that have an offer from UTK have camped with the Vols?

the only people requiring that explanation are the ones with the typical "3* don't want" star gazing attitude toward it.

This is awfully familiar to the Butch Jones staff. I guess we'll have to wait and see if some big offers come in for this guy

Difference will be: do these 3 stars develop into good players, or do they wash out?

With Butch it felt like they had some 3 stars that were underrated, but a lot that just washed out/never developed into a player.

At this point I will take a 3* that can at least be developed to be a quality backup. How many years did we see a 2nd team that was a huge gap/dropoff from the 1st team?
Very few players in college will be pro bowlers. Not many even make it to college awards level. Our problem has been that the "highs" for some position groups could be really high, but the lows were so low it overshadowed the highs. No player can be everywhere on the field and the great players get worn down really easily when they have to try to be.

I’m gonna call you out on that last sentence. Show some proof, evidence anything. And name the rating agency.

No such as thing as a Jones 3 star and Pruitt 3 star.

John Kelly
Cam Sutton
Dylan Wiesman
Owen Williams...were all very productive 3 stars! All by Butch.

All recruits should be judged on individual basis.

This kid Harrison is a straight dog! Pure Football player. Who is also very athletic.
Butch was a decent scout.
But Pruitt is better.

I'll give you Kelly, Williams, and Wiesman, but Cam Sutton committed to Dooley on 8/8/12 per Rivals. Sure he signed with Butch, but after the HYPE Butch was getting everyone.

I think we feel the same way on this, and i'm not discounting all Butchy's 3*'s but when you can't develop them it is a waste.
