Vols Fall Practice #7

My guess is Merk has the GoPro because coaches are wanting to see what he is seeing on the field in order to help his decision making.

Im glad Merk is making it interesting, but I would truly be surprised if it was anyone other than Aguilar.

I thought it might be just Merk's personal preference for his own study but Joey A had it on for a practice or two so either Merk let him borrow it or it's something the coaches tell a specific QB to wear.

So an ON3 reporter based in Nashville who covers multiple teams has better sources than an ON3 reporter based in Knoxville who specifically covers the Vols?

Interesting take.
Lol. You realize you’re taking the same seat Nico’s dad did opposite Nakos.

You don’t have to be on campus. You have to be connected with the right person that is, and Nakos has that connection.

He broke the Nico story before any of the media folks on campus (Hubbs, Price, etc). Keep banging that drum.

The Nico story broke because Nico shopped other schools. I'm not denying he has contacts around the country so the Nico story makes sense for him to get first.

Day in and day out contact SHOULD make your local reporter have an edge on practice issues.

I keep seeing this narrative on here that Merklinger could potentially win this QB battle and I'm not saying you don't have every right to that opinion but I just don't agree. It seems to be a competition in name only. I've seen those before.
"and I'm not saying you don't have every right to your opinion but I just don't agree" back at you. no issue with you disagreeing

I love peaceful disagreements. I hope I'm wrong. I really would prefer if Merklinger showed enough to grab the reins. I just think they probably knew what they had in him when they brought in Joey.

It’s crazy because Pete Nakos( Spelling sorry) is reporting that Joey is getting most of the reps with the ones. I know the other media guys only see so much and they only report what they see but evidently their sources within the program saying JA is getting most of the first team reps take that with a grain of salt, but there are reports of it.
I can tell you that ain’t true.

Part of me feels like we will see Aguilar early in the year, especially on some suicide squad type plays where he has to put his body on the line where Merk would still be a little frail.

Could be the differentiating factor for Aguilar if he doesn't wow on the practice field.
They are the same size.

The kicker is the time we had to "bring in Joey" was extremely limited there wasn't a big pool of candidates.

No matter where Merk was in his development, ready to start or not, we needed another QB and Joey A had just been bumped out of a job by our old QB.

It's not like we were picking who we wanted as a QB. At that point we were picking who we could get.

I am glad Merk and Joey are dueling it out, and GMac not too far behind.

But, whenever our coaches know who is "the guy" I hope they can keep it on the down-low for as long as possible.

For, as much as us fans would like to know, I would like it even better for Syracuse to NOT know, to try and guess, and prepare for wrong guy or all of them. 🤔

Me too. I really want one them to step up, hopefully it happens in tomorrow's scrimmage. It has been awhile since we've had a QB competention as good.

There's very little data to prepare for Merk or G-Mac because they've taken very few and no college game reps and with Joey A you're looking at SunBelt Conference games for hints.

I don't see how Syracuse prepares "specially" for Merk vs Joey A other than experience vs inexperience. What am I missing?

Well, there is a bit of film available for both Merk and Joey, and they have the exact same style and strengths of QB play.
But, I'm sure you are not missing anything.
🤷🤔

Seems like they are all pretty close in accuracy. The starter will be the one who can read the defense to get you in the right play and then find the open man the fastest so the ball gets there on time. This is assuming that no one is too far behind in the playbook.

Routes on air won't tell you a lot. It's a whole different ballgame mentally and composure-wise when people are flying at you and the defense is trying to deceive you.

The coaches will know a lot more after the scrimmage.

something I’m noticing that gets flown a bit under the radar due to the starting qb battle is we may have a real stud in Gmac. He is quietly out throwing these other guys consistently as far as accuracy is concerned. Hope he bulks up just in time to battle Faizon in the near future. I’m optimistic, but in the new age of the portal it is hard to imagine we’ll get to keep everyone involved.

Sidenote: I saw a poster say Aguilar and Merk are the same size. Mark is listed as 6’3 216, JA at 6’3 225, but to the eye test I can see why people would say he is bigger. Aguilar has some serious quads, lol. Just looks more filled out even though the weights are similar.

Aguilar has a lower body like a Linebacker. Would not say the same about Merk.
Exactly the point I made in my post above. Despite what they are listed as, Aguilar looks like he could truck over someone. I saw them standing side by side in a practice video a few days ago and the size difference was pretty substantial to the eye.

Right, and while we all look forward to GMac being bigger and stronger, at 195, I think he might be as big as Tyler Bray was when he set freshman passing records for us, surpassing Peyton and Ainge. Bray was listed at 210 as a JUNIOR. What was he as a freshman? 🤔

You know, it’s crazy to think about when you bring it to my attention. Odd how different people carry weight in their own way. I know Bray was not a big guy, but Gmac in these practice videos looks like he’s walking on toothpicks to be frank. Not to take away from his ability, but he definitely looks like he would not withstand much abuse.
