Vols Fall Practice #7

He could have details on what's happening after the media leaves but who knows. Just looking a completion rates being posted Merk looks ahead. But hey it's Day 7.
You really think completion percentage of passes on air in the media session will be the deciding factor CJH uses to determine his starter?

No, I think he uses who looks good in practice overall, like Joe Milton over Hendon Hooker, but the only evidence we have is who is seen working with the #1s vs who is seen working with the #2s vs the #3s.

I'll bet it's still a competition for QB1 and that's fine. Ryan Day said he's got a QB competition going also that will go deep into Fall Camp at tOSU.

Having at least 2 talented QBs is a good problem to have for UT.

If Joey A sits his last year after being picked up at the last minute for $1M+, kudos to the young man for his good fortune.
Part of me feels like we will see Aguilar early in the year, especially on some suicide squad type plays where he has to put his body on the line where Merk would still be a little frail.

Could be the differentiating factor for Aguilar if he doesn't wow on the practice field.

It sounds very much like E. Cain is trying to impose his will on the situation. I think that's why we keep getting these conflicting reports about what actually happened and who was taking first team reps.
I was actually wondering if that may be the case.
I just hope they pick a QB and roll with it and if next man up name gets called then go in their like Hooker did and ball out.

LOTS of moving parts on our offense: QB room, WR room, and OLine room so we are not really in the "we've got our guys, let's polish them into a unit" phase.

I want a set OLine ASAP because pre-snap penalties suck the life out of drives and reps together is everything.

I'd be curious which QB the receivers prefer and there was criticism of Merk's playbook grasp but where is Joey A with the playbook?

To me, it's a very good year to be Josh Heupel's gastroenterologist because my stomach would be in knots 24/7 with all the questions on offense.

Was reported he was able to digest the Spring installation in just 4 days. Seems like his experience in other offenses will be beneficial.

No, just said Merk was ahead not the starter. Again Day 7 and completion rate can be use as a measuring stick to determine who's ahead but we're only getting a small sampling from the media.

This is what has made me believe Joey will get the starting nod but Merk not going make it easy on Heuple to pick Joey over him. Will be interesting for sure.
If Heupel picks Joey A or any QB based on what we spent for them, we've got big issues.

Sometimes you whiff, like Nico, no matter what you paid. For all we know Faizon Brandon may not make the transition to D1 football well at all no matter what we pay him and how well he's coached.

No matter what we paid Joey A, if he's not SEC starter quality, he shouldn't start.

You are absolutely right! Routes on air is such a small portion of playing QB. We only have to look as far as Hendon Hooker and Josh Dobbs to see that even after an entire fall camp, the best show up on game day.

Doesn't the media only see routes on air? Maybe Nakos's sources see the throws when they are in coverage situations.

Yep they usually get 15-20 minutes viewing time. No idea what goes on after the media leaves.

Nakos predicted Aguilar as QB1 in early July well before preseason camp. I believe it's just his lean nothing more.

Good news on McCoy

QB competition.... Merk looks to me to be ahead

Counting the throws to running backs and routes on air, Jake Merklinger completed 17-of-18 passes, Joey Aguilar completed 15-of-18 passes and George MacIntyre completed 16-of-17 passes. Thought both Travis Smith Jr. and Radarious Jackson made some nice snags as did Kitselman on a Merklinger throw that was a bit high.

"Edrees Farooq continues to work in the first team with Andre Turrentine" impressive
I keep seeing this narrative on here that Merklinger could potentially win this QB battle and I'm not saying you don't have every right to that opinion but I just don't agree. It seems to be a competition in name only. I've seen those before.
