Vols Fall Practice #6

I think it’s fair to say at this point with his snapping issues that he’s Sam’s backup. Which is fine since that frees up a guard spot for Perry. I think that’s a pretty good rotation if you ask me. Just young is all.
Light on experience but much more talented across the board than any line we have put out there yet in the Heupel era.

How thin we are at wide receiver and db is worrisome, could go south real quick thats not me being negative thats just reality.
Yeah. Maybe I'm just overly optimistic but I'm not as worried about WR depth as most others. We've got 5 solid options IMO between Matthews, Staley, Brazzell, Smith Jr, and Boo. I don't know what to think Jefferson, Jackson, and Dodson yet but that's 3 more guys who should be able to contribute. That's 8 bodies right there. Then you have Braylon Harmon and Tommy Winton III who appeared in some games last year and the JUCO transfer Deon Hardin. So I'm seeing 11 guys who could reasonably be expected to contribute. We leaned on 4 primary WRs last year and only 7 recorded more than 5 catches.

That being said, we don't have much SEC experience in our depth chart, and that's a valid concern.

We will soon find out if this DL can be as good as last years but man do we have some dudes in that room. Hobbs, Weathersby, Herring, and Ross have all transformed their bodies and look like monsters.

Weathersby is a guy I honestly had forgotten about after he got hurt his freshman year...there was a lot of buzz he was going to be special when he first got here.

Is it just me or does this seem like the most athletic roster we've had since the 90s?

No its not just you. This is a very good looking football team physically. Daniel Hood and Ollie Lane commented on it on the Sports Source. They talked about how the players dont have an ounce of body fat on them. Whatever they're doing when it comes Strength and Conditioning, it's working.

I think we did that previously. His name was Joe Milton but Hendon Hooker ran the offense better.

I'm hoping that Heupel gets a better read on QBs this year.
Too early to tell much since they Judy went into full pads yesterday. I think we would be in good shape with either of the guys getting first abdominal second snaps so far. We should know more after Saturday.

Hobbs and Herring look way better than they did last year. I think we can expect both to take huge steps forward as third year guys.

I hope you're right. A recurring theme on VN has been that Coach Heupel "didn't trust Joe Milton and Nico" to run the offense and throw but there's also the possibility that Coach Heupel didn't trust our RECEIVERS to execute their routes well also.

He obviously trusted Hyatt and Tillman and Co to be where they needed to be and get open but maybe it's not JUST the QB who has struggled since 2022.

Are these reporters off duty weather forecasters? I'm not sure what happened today other than Aguilar throwing a nice deep ball. Not even sure who even took first team reps at qb.
What I’m getting out of most of these reports is that we are darn good at routes on air - So we’ve got that going for us, which is good.

Aight, any thoughts on this OL?

L-R Lance Heard, Wendell Moe, William Satterwhite, Jesse Perry and David Sanders.
Looking like Pendelton will be center. The main question is will the inexperienced Perry play next to true freshman Sanders or will more experienced Moe play there.

I am thinking of our WR issues. Since we are fairly stacked at TE does anyone remember what UGA did to get Brock Bowers the ball back in '23. I know Bowers was the GOAT and as good as Kitselman and Staes are I do not expect them to get the yards after catch like Bowers did but I feel like if they are always open in space it really screws up the defenses. I have absolute faith in Heup and am sure he will figure out a way to get them the ball.
I'm thinking we'll use a lot of two TE sets this year for that reason. Should help the run game, but there's no reason you can't put Ethan Davis in the slot anyway.

Two tight end formations can be fun run play action from…provided the run game is strong. You’ll force the D to substitute for size and can get some interesting mismatches if you have athletic tight ends

Because Heupel likes tempo, I'm iffy that he'll run much with 2 tight ends. If we're running the slower offense we've seen recently, it's very possible, but at his best Heupel really likes the spread to open up his running game.

If we're not very confident of our WR room, using 2 tight ends definitely could be a big part of maximizing the running game.

I'd not be surprised to see several interesting wrinkles this year against ETSU as we settle in to what this team can do successfully.

Yesterday on Swain's show he mentioned a comment from Elarbee that Satterwhite still has some work to do with his conditioning I think it was? I haven't listened to the Elarbee interview yet but basically he was implying that's not a great sign for him to be the guy. No idea if it's Swain trying to generate some attention or not (I don't think that's his thing?).

Guess I need to listen to it again.

There's nothing like a good tight end...!

Is it just me or does this seem like the most athletic roster we've had since the 90s?

100% correct. This roster is really young...49% of them are freshmen or RS freshmen according to Hubbs. Its the most talented we have been in at least 20 years though. Also the 26 class is a MONSTER class on the offense side. If we land 5* RB Hiter who is the #1 RB in the nation this 26 class could be legendary. The QB, Oline and WRs for 2026 are crazy good IMO.

Athletic and big. Two things you need to be successful in the SEC. We finally held a coach down long enough to let him build the roster properly

Agreed. Holding onto subpar coaches wouldn't have helped us...but finally having a really good staff like CJH has put together is paying off in a way we havent seen since Fulmer was on top of his game. The consistency of 30 wins over the last 3 seasons has recruits and current players believing in UT and this coaching staff on a level we have been missing for so long. We are beating out UGA and Bama for recruits...not ACC schools and Vandy or Kentucky. Different level of athletes and it shows.
