Vols Fall Practice #5

Heard is taking on an advanced leadership role, as well. This caused fellow Tennessee lineman Sham Umarov to dub him the ‘head coach’ of the offensive line.

“He’s one of the biggest speakers in our room,” Umarov said. “The way he speaks, you can see everybody is locked in like he’s the head coach in our unit… When we’re all talking, like I said, we’re so tight that we all listen to each other.”

This leadership extends to both sides of the ball. Heard is not just coralling the offensive linemen, but also giving a helpful voice to the defense.

During practice, the fronts are competing with each other and trading blows. While it can get frustrating to be on the losing side, Heard and company realize it’s more beneficial to coach each other and share what works and what doesn’t.

Good to see Boo back. Wonder when he might start taking reps with the WRs with all these injuries.

Agreed about Boo being back.

Heres what sucks: everything I have read says Boo is supposed to get some snaps at Slot WR. There are 2 problems there...

1. We are loaded at Slot and super thin outside on both sides. In the slot we have Staley, Dodson, Jefferson ( then Boo) so 4 out of our 8 scholarship WRs (counting Boo) are all Slot WRs.

2. In 12 personnel there is no Slot WR. Thats who is replaced by the 2nd TE. We are loaded at TE this year. Best position on offense with 4 guys that are legit SEC quality TEs. We will definitely see this formation this year IMO, especially if we have injuries to starting WRs (please no)

The coaches obviously know these issues and I trust them to put our guys in a position to succeed. This staff has been amazing at UT and I am very thankful for them. I am excited to watch these guys grow up this season and see what they can do. I still say we can go 9-3 this year without Nico and despite being so young at WR and Safety. Cant wait for the season to start. GO VOLS

At this point, we may need somebody from VN to suit up and catch some balls. Highly concerned about the health of our WR room. We might just be a 12 man team moving forward if we have a good power run game with TE play.

Glad to see the QBs rebound a bit. Looks like the competition between Merk and Aguilar is going to stay hot for a while, but like others have pointed out it really wont matter much until week 1 when we see them actually play.

I think the defense is going to be insane again this year. They are packed with studs in the box, and if we can stay consistent at DB then we will stay in a lot of games.
Yeah the WRs terrifies me. It has the potential to derail our season.

I didn’t even consider that Boo probably isn’t big enough to play outside WR. Thanks for the analysis.

I couldn't agree more. I really don't like our WR room depth but Heup has an excellent SC program so hopefully they can avoid the injury bug.

Yes. Earlier last week we saw the Line being told "Grab the jersey, it's right there!"

Every game thread we see guys screaming about holding on every play and most of it is the taught technique of grab and release/shed or getting it done on the inside by keeping the man in front of you with at least one hand on his numbers.

There are holds and guys being just wrestled down but to see a VN game thread you'd think everyone out there is a human praying mantis.
I mean, yes. You are taught to grab the chest plate and steer them. But if you yank a guy to the ground, have your hands outside or are grabbing them outside your frame, that would be holding. There have been some very egregious ones that have been missed over the years but grabbing the chest plate is normal if you're within you're frame.

I saw a video of what appeared to be TEs fighting against press coverage or punt coverage players blocking then fighting free from the opponents punt return blocking. None were OL.
It looked like a block and realease into a route but very well could've been for punt coverage. Basically the same concept.

I don't know about depth at receiver, but one or two of them need to be that guy, they haven't had that since Hyatt.. Need someone that can run past them and a guy or two that can body past them. Young Oline, new QB, runningback by committee. May need to get the liquor cabinet stocked up this year.
