Vols Fall Practice #3

Eh. Our offense has been lackluster the past two seasons. Even with the turbulence at QB and new players on the O-line, I am hopeful that we’ll beat least as good - maybe better - on offense. The WRs and O-line have been habitual underachievers for the past two years. If those two units can solidify and play on at least a somewhat consistent level, a lot of opportunities open up!

Can’t say much since it’s only practice and they generally don’t get access to the whole thing and everybody has off days. However, I think poor catching in practice with no defenders and no pressure is a cause for concern considering we’ve watched 2 straight seasons of poor WR play (with most of the blame shifted to the QBs).

Doesn’t make anybody a negative nancy to point it out but also doesn’t mean the sky is falling either. I think I’ll reserve my judgement until the end of this month. If we come out of the gates with butterfingers against Syracuse then we’ll know we’ve got a big problem but I think this won’t be an issue. GBO 🍊

sounds like passing game has regressed
Considering the QB situation, no portal activity and Brazzel being sidelined, I'm not sure what folks were expecting? Heupel chose to roll with the youth on this team. Gonna take time I suspect. I expect a somewhat rocky start to the season. Hopefully, things click later on and we don't put ourselves in a hole during the first few weeks of the schedule. This team gets 8 wins and I'm a happy camper.

Nico had the physical tools, but not the drive and mental aspect. Aguilar has the drive and maybe he sees the field better? Still, he's making a huge jump. The game will be way faster for him now. Can't expect him to jump into the deep end and not struggle.

I'll translate the 9 for 11:

For Gen Z: It's like Fortnite. 9 out of 11 vs bots sucks. Not bad for Blitz Royal, but if you hit 9 out of 11 in Ranked Reload you're going to the playoffs.

For Millenials: 9 out of 11 against pure air sucks. In a scrimmage that would be pretty good. If we do this against GA or 'Bama we have a good chance of beating them if the penalties go our way.

For Baby Boomers: We suck. Get ready for a sucky year. You already knew this season had 6-6 all over it, so why are you complaining? Heupel is never going to get us to the next level unless he makes serious changes right now.

Relatively short routes on air. It's not like these guys haven't seen a million passes and they spend regular time with a JUGS most days.

I'm dumbfounded that saying "Catch the ball if it's in your hands" is in any way controversial or being negative.

It's like being a center. Can you snap just 9 of 11 well and put the other 2 over the QBs head? I think not. There are expectations.
Its also the first day in shells in like 4 months. Every year people freak out about drops in camp lol

once again, Gen X is forgotten

they’re probably used to that at this point to be fair

So you're just ruling Merk out? He's the best on this roster right now in my opinion.

Not really concerned yet on the routes on air period. It looks like right now Merk is QB1 due to the Gopro which is ok by me.

I actual believe that our defense is going to be better than last year. I like what I am hearing about our LBs. Barring injuries in the secondary, this unit has a chance of being elite as do our RBs. Lets just hope the QB/WRs can get in synch. I am good with either Merk or Aguilar although I think Aguilar has some more experience in reading coverages.

Merk wore the GoPro in the Spring when he definitely wasn't QB1.
