Vols Fall Practice #3

I just watched a 15 minute video of NFL receivers dropping passes. It happens. You are probably one of those who thought MM was a must get out of high school now you think he sucks because he dropped one pass in practice.
I never mentioned Matthews specifically. You're making that all up. I mentioned the fact we've seen dropsies from our SEC receivers for a couple of years. Here it is again.

I wonder if your video of NFL receivers is against air instead of in games? Against air..... there are expectations that you catch the ball very consistently. It's hardly an outrageous expectation.

Again, Heupel is nearly mute in most practices and they made it a point to say he went after the WRs. I'm sure they realize like I'm saying, there are expectations not being met.

Ah yes. So according to you they have to be perfect or else

9-11 was horrendous. I assume most of you must not have lived through it.

They definitely haven’t lol wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends drop passes all the time in practice. It is extremely rare to have a flawless throwing session unless you are in an NFL roster practicing with the 1’s

You are so black and white. No one should be happy about it. Doesn’t mean it will continue but if it does it’s a problem
There are some on this board that think because of a couple drops in that means this WR core will suck. I know how some of our fans are. They will turn on a player in a heartbeat if they don’t play up to their expectations. It’s already happening with MM.

As always thanks Fingers

Shells day, aight now.

Merk has been the only quarterback wearing a GoPro . Arion Carter was the defensive player with the GoPro on his helmet.

Ok you media guys are killing me.

The routes on air session with the Tennessee quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends was horrendous. Remember, there’s much more of practice we don’t see, but from what we did in this period – it was not good.

Both Jake Merklinger and Joey Aguilar were nine-for-11 passing in the five or so minutes of routes on air the media was able to watch
I was thinking like you on the passing stat

Here's why I'm testy about drops of good balls. They've gotten worse for UT every year. It's an issue. Just watch the first minute or so and see the numbers. We need receivers to catch good passes and certainly against air.

I’m not watching anything related to John Pennington. The guy is a scumbag and a coward.

FWIW, a post on TOS who watched the entire practice said the receivers were much better as practice went on.

Have a good day.

We're going 11-1. Get it right. Natty appearance as well.
If we had a Lamar Jackson type player at QB then yeah I would believe this.

As it stands- I think this team will have moments of brilliance and more moments of head scratching.

I can’t get a reading on these guys.
I see Aguilar as the perfect catalyst to a magical season, but there’s so many variables and nothing feels certain.

In 2022 we knew we would have a good team.

There’s talent everywhere, but so much depends on Aguilar.

What if the drops were early at the beginning of the practice and they were just getting warmed up. 9 of 11. I would take every day

Relatively short routes on air. It's not like these guys haven't seen a million passes and they spend regular time with a JUGS most days.

I'm dumbfounded that saying "Catch the ball if it's in your hands" is in any way controversial or being negative.

It's like being a center. Can you snap just 9 of 11 well and put the other 2 over the QBs head? I think not. There are expectations.

Yeah I was like they both went 9-11 and that's bad?!?! What kind of dream world are they living in?
I don't want another year of WR dropping balls that hit their hands. I don't care if it wasn't perfect.

As far as Boo I hope they put him to work tomorrow. I get it he needs to his punishment but if we're expecting him to start then he needs these reps
Media got to see three sessions today. It would be great if the media told us which session their reviewing.

yep Boo needs to work soon.

Those bitching about folks being on the WRs for drops should note that Heupel is rarely said to go after guys in practice but today it's reported Coach went after the WRs for focus and drops.

I'll trust Heupel's judgement.
You are correct, but remember, the media only gets to see about the first 10% of practice. As far as they, or anyone else on here knows, they were perfect the rest of the practice. Practice #3 in fall camp is not time to pull what hair some of you have out.

My original comment was:

"WRs with the dropsies at Tennessee? We've seen this movie before."

Nothing severe. Just the truth. Suddenly people act like I'm saying the receivers are trash and we're doomed. 🤷‍♂️

The next thing I know I'm being accused of hating Matthews and "turning on him."

We all saw the dropsies the last 2 seasons, not that we got spotless QB play either but we got a good share of good passes dropped. It needs to get better. There's no hair pulling or freaking out or anything in my original statement.

Relax, not an attackChilled. Just commenting for those who are acting as if the team is doomed before the season has started. Never accused you of any of those in my post. Chillax.

The guy I was responding to was ACTING like I said that and projecting a bunch of crap on anyone expecting better from the WRs, including me.

Seriously, I'm mostly upbeat so far. I like watching Joey A throw and that he gets the ball up and out very smoothly. I like that we're seeing motion in the snippet of practice and a little pistol. I've yet to hear Coach Garner in the background getting all up on guys, but I'll be looking forward to it.

It's early yet. We all have a bad day here and there. Sometimes, everyone has a bad day. And I don't know that today was even a "bad day" for the Vols.

Like most teams, we have questions. Like some, we think we know where we'll be solid. The answers will come in time. Circle the Georgia game.

That's when we'll know what we've got.

There's not a thread on it yet (that I can find), but I think our speed and tempo is too much for Syracuse. We pull away in the 2nd half. I would like to see both Merk and JA get some playing time. GMac needs a year, IMO, and another 20 pounds of muscle.

They say defense wins championships. Ours should be solid. Maybe really good. With this defense, if the offense can hang 30 a game, we should be in the conversation at season's end. I'm in the 8-4 / 9-3 camp, but 10-2 is not out of reach if this team reaches its' full potential.

Just need to stay healthy, and get a couple of guys back from injury / offseason med procedures. Youngsters will play a role in how far this team goes.

But...it's fall practice...and it's VN...and the eternal debate between the Eeyores and the Sunshine Pumpers goes on.

It is what it is.
