Vols Fall Practice #10

Feel like the RB room might be the most slept on unit on the team this year cause there's no bonafide star. Going to be quite a luxury to wear teams down with 3-4 legit backs and good luck trying to tackle Peyton Lewis in the 4th qtr.

Heupel has lived on a strong run game since he has been here.

Everybody talks about Hooker and the space + pace offense, but a huge part of setting that up is a consistent run game.

Even last year when we couldn't complete a downfield pass and defenses knew we were most likely running the ball, Sampson still had a breakout year. Now we are back to having multiple fresh legs to sub in.

ā€œTennessee football continued its preseason camp work with a Tuesday morning workout inside the Anderson Training Facility as Haslam Practice Field was taking in on a lot of water.ā€ Is he saying it’s raining?

More I see and hear from Coach Sims, the more I like him, his mentality, approach to the game as a whole, and work ethic. He's turning out to be a very, very capable replacement for Mack.
Love the line "good is the opponent of great" - always do better.
Darn nice fit. Really like RB room he has put together

Do you have inside knowledge or basing off of what we see here??

What we get here is a small sample of the practice so all we know is he did poorly while reporters were present. No one but the team and coaches know what happens after reporters leave.
Swain saw the scrimmage. Yesterday on his show he said something to the effect that GMac has the best tools and throws the best ball but is a Freshman and doesn’t have the size yet to take hits, Joey obviously has the most experience and Merk was the worst

Being bad at your job is one thing, but as a reporter, being deliberately deceptive is something else. I guess you wouldn't be doing this job if you weren't a fan and all fans have preferences, but as a journalist, putting out bad information intentionally is not a good for his career. I'm just curious as to why...what does he think is going to happen by manipulating the truth?
I honestly think he is just dumb, which was what I was trying to say. Idk if there is any malice involved, I think he’s just a dumb person.

Any info on how Heard is looking at LT and Moe, or others, are looking at LG?

Heard really struggled last year. Hoping to see a lot of improvement there.
Haven't heard anything on Moe

He struggled early in the year, but played well the back half. He came to camp badly out of shape last year and it took him a while to acclimate.

I think he has been an upgrade from Mack to this point and I love Mack… if he can get hiter or georges or both in the next couple of years he will be a clear cut upgrade and possibly a top 5 rb coach in all of college football…

The most notable development from Tuesday morning was top LEO Joshua Josephs was back on the field for the first time since very early in camp. The senior has been dealing with what’s been termed a ā€œnaggingā€ issue, so his return to any sort of practice participation is a positive. Josephs was in a regular orange defensive jersey this morning.

I don’t like the use of ā€œnagging issueā€. Hope it something that nags him all year

Moe and Pendleton are both really good (as expected via portal) and will start on the Oline. The only question regarding starters by all accounts is whether Pendleton starts at Guard or Center. The lineups potentially are:

Heard
Moe
Satterwhite Center
Pendleton
Sanders

Or

Heard
Moe
Pendleton Center
Perry
Sanders

You are correct that Heard needs to be much improved, i think he will be. He was hurt all year before and 30lbs overweight. He has dropped 30lb and by all accounts is healthy. We should be significantly better this year on Oline. We were great run blocking last year...but abysmal in pass protection and graded out 105th out of ~135 FBS teams overall. Thats including the good run blocking that led the SEC in rushing...so pass pro must have been near the worst in FBS. We should be better at every position this year on Oline except maybe Center.
Can't wait for ball to start. GO VOLS
Great summary of the OL situation.

IMHO, Heard got a bum wrap last year. To keep opponents guessing, coaches minimized the nature of his injury and kept suggesting he would be back any day. When he wasn’t, it left people thinking he was slacking. When he did come back, he was out of shape, which made things look even worse. I think we will see a very good year from him this year.

I thought about this today...all the reports from camp and scrimmages about the passing game not being good yet (defense always ahead like this early on) have us dropping in the polls to 19th and #24th, talking heads on the web saying we are really gonna struggle this year etc.

Coach Hype hopes and PRAYS they put 8 men in the box and try to shut down our run game...thinking we can't pass well. He will IMMEDIATELY scorch them over the top for long TDs. Immediately. Our coaches would be THRILLED to see loaded boxes. The UGAs and OSUs did the exact opposite of that last year. They played Dime and Nickel in Cover 3 etc and kept everybody back...then tried to stop the run as best they could. Tried to take away the big plays. It STILL didnt work most of the time. IF Nico hits the 2 wide open TDs vs Bama in the 1st half, that game is a blowout. IF Nico hit WRs and Nimrod didnt drop 2 sure thing TDs against Arkansas...we don't lose that game and finish 11-1. Those long TDs were STILL there last season despite defenses playing deep coverages with light boxes. If they play heavy boxes and Man or Cover 2 defense we will torch them with deep balls IMO.

We are loaded at RB this season. Legit have 5 RBs that are SEC quality. Havent been this deep in that room in a long time. If teams play the Dime/Prevent type defenses again this year, we will run all over them IMO. It will probably take a few games to get the passing game going...we will be elite running the ball from game 1. We have a better AND deeper Oline than last season. We have 5 different RBs that can tote the rock. I am not saying we are gonna be a juggernaut on offense. Defense may have to carry us some while the offense "gels" especially early season. I dont see any reason why our offense wont be as good or better than last year though. Defense will be really good again, even if they dont finish ranked quite as high as 5th nationally like last year. GO VOLS

Trey Poteat is # 21 for anybody else wondering.

He’s put on some muscle. He looks like a safety now. And safety that moves well.
He's a good looking FR. His dad has coached DBs at several different places and is currently at Iowa State, so Tre came coached up.
