Vols DE Jonathan Kongbo Shows Off Strength with 400 Pound Squats

All of these experts talking about how much he should be lifting, what most athletes do blah..blah SHOULD post a video of themselves under 400 lbs and squat. Then talk. GBO

What you're asking is irrelevant. There are plenty of numbers to use for a comparison and none require a poster to do the lifting themselves.

For example, I can't bench close to 300 but if an SEC DE has the same issue then he's probably in trouble

jack's right. Some of our vn posters must have not either been in actual weight training rooms or lifted themselves. 400 is ok for a guy his size, but the largest muscles in your body are below your waist. i don't think he'll find many sec ots losing sleep over this.

twss :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's a beast in the weight room, but I hope to go along with that strength he's able to accelerate off the edge from 0-20 mph in 0.4 seconds

And if not, it will still give me great joy to see him power bull rush too!

GBO!!!!

I'll post here what I posted on FB in response to this video. No offense, but I would certainly hope a JUCO DE could squat 405 with ease. Most D1 wide receivers could do the same. At his size and position he should be able to bench 405 for that many reps with relative ease.

I see what you are saying and I don't completely disagree with you, however it is a lot more difficult for a person with longer arms and longer legs to move huge amounts of weight because they have to move it a further distance. The 5' 8" strong guy will generally out lift the 6' 6" strong guy.....at least at first. But the 6' 6" guy can generally throw a football significantly further than the short guy. Different types of strength, different factors in the physics of it.

that lower body strength will really help with his power and explosion off the ball. Squats are probably the single most important exercise for an athlete. It's hits so many muscle groups, from quads, hams, glutes, and calves. It also helps the hips as well as core muscles and spinel erectors. All of these which help make defensive lineman great. Along with proper stretching the squat is the king of all exercises. For us non athletes it also releases stored testosterone in our bodies as well.

Question for you serious power lifters...what does 3 reps of 400lbs with that level of effort equal for a max?

I used to compete in bodybuilding and did some powerlifting too (although now I'm just a fat ass). I'd say he can definitely squat at least 495, which would be five 45lb plates on each side. He can probably even do 585, but when you start getting above the 500 range, a big issue becomes whether your spine can support the weight and you start risking some serious injuries. You really should stay away from one rep maxes if you're a football player. He should stay at 405 and just keep working on getting more reps.

What makes you want to at 38?

Why not? Why does the desire to be in shape and powerful require explanation or reasoning? I only ask with genuine sincerity because I get asked by colleagues why do I lift like I do and I can't pester them like I can an anonymomous individual on the web lol

Here's a Vine video of Kongbo from late 2014 showing him squat 600, and I've seen his max listed as 705.

Thanks for posting this.

The point of the original video in the op, was to show that where he was, there wasn't enough room on the bars.
It was not meant to suggest that was anywhere near his max.

Some start questioning or downplaying when the truth is, they were unable to understand context of what was happening.
The worst part is some continued after you posted the actual numbers.

I quit smoking last year in January and new I needed something to focus my idle time and energy on. As I started lifting it became a why not keep going just to see what will come of it. As a result I am in the best shape of my life since HS when I wrestled. I actually enjoy it and have recently gotten my wife into it as well. Hell, she can out squat many of the guys that go to our gym and is 5'4" 130#. She is in better shape than our 15 & 17 yr old daughters, one of which plays lacrosse.

Wish I could get my wife to get into it. Congrats on quitting smoking

Tow of the best things I have ever done. She and I are much closer now that we have something to do together that we both actually enjoy. Most women are scared to lift because they fear they will get big and muscular. They don't seem yo understand that they are not like us. Hell, most men can only get so big without using. It isn't in most of the populations genetics to get as big as the dudes you see in magazines. Like you said, most don't understand why anyone works so hard at something like this.

geez @ 19 i could barely squat 225 lbs. but, after years of working my rear off, i can attest that was a half squat. show me 4hundy fully squatted and ill nod :) joking..mad 'spect for kid, hes physically gifted for sure. i wish their wasnt such an emphasis on heavy weight and we could atta boy repitition in sports. but, glad to see him working on legs. def an underrated area for most folks.

Glad to see him putting in the work, also, glad see him using wide stance. so many times i see guys and gals doing (if they do squats at all) narrow stances which focus primarily on quadricep growth. ya gotta be good at them all!

geez 400 lbs at 19? craziness.

Just not that impressive to have a dude 20 years old playing D-1 football in the SEC squatting 405 for a meager 3 reps.....

Wasn't Jamal Lewis, Al Wilson, and a bunch of others BENCHING over 400 pounds???

good grief, folks.....I was squatting 430 at the end of my work-out for 4 reps when I was an old fart of 31....

And that was a while ago.......:salute:
