Was checking the combine grades this morning and decided the check how our Vols are graded compared to others. Here's what I found...

Josh Dobbs
- 5.2 (#8 of 13 graded QB's)

Alvin Kamara
- 6.0 (#3 of 30 graded RB's)

Josh Malone
- no draft grade

Derek Barnett
- 6.2 (tied for 6th out of 58 DL's)

Cam Sutton
- 5.8 (tied for 8th out of 35 CB's)

Jalen Reeves-Maybin
- 5.4 (tied for 14th out of 29 LB's)

I think out of all our guys, Sutton, Dobbs and Malone can move higher up the draft board with a good combine. I think the cat is out of the bag that Kamara is one of the best RB's this draft, even grading higher than McCaffrey (who had much more production). Dobbs can sneak into the 4th-5th round if he impresses on the field. Sutton could make his way into 2nd-3rd round conversation if he runs well in the 40 IMO.

Malone to me would be a steal in the 4th-5th round.

These are all a bit like preseason rankings. It certainly helps to start higher and hold on (Kamara) than try to fight from bottom (Malone) but yes, positions will go up or down depending on many factors.

Of course, that's true of any player at the combine, UT or otherwise.

How did Malone not grade?

The most important grade (Where they are drafted)...Here's my projections

Barnett - Middle of 1st
Kamara - Early Second
Sutton - Late Second
Reeves-Maybin - 4th Round
Dobbs - 6th Round
Malone - 7th Round

If the Pats have a 1st round pick then I don't see McCaffrey making it past them....he seems exactly like the type of skill player the Pats love.

True...but is it a position of need enough for them to use a pick that high?* Only they can decide how such things will be weighted.

*And who knows where he'll be available. I was going by use of their first pick.

Malone should have stayed another year, I could see him ending up like Kelly Washington in terms of his career. Both should have stayed another year to become more polished but maybe he will perform very well.

Dang Malone and North really hurt themself by the desire to get money faster. Thing is they don't realize that if they waited a year, the money would have probably doubled

I think you are right about most of them. I would switch Dobbs and Malone.

Malone is only going to get better, whereas Dobbs has probably peaked and what you see is what you are going to get not much better. Malone SHOULD go 5th round and Dobbs very very late 7th round OR free agent pickup for a camp

Easier said than done. They saw Cam come back and he would have should have been top 15 pick. JRM would have been a top 50 pick now their stock plummeted becuase of injuries. It is hard to not say no to the NFL and the millions they could get. That is what they have been working for their whole life. YES Malone would have been top 40 pick BUT he deicded he can't risk getting hurt. He is a good player he will rise to the top.

Malone's decision was a much better one, more reasonable one imo. North's was done out of emotion, he was mentally done at Tennessee. With Malone, he just posted huge numbers and was losing his quarterback/would've had to play with a brand new, first year starting qb in 2017 and it was a gamble to come back. Different situations imo.

Easy to see why Malone made a reasonable decision whereas North's was made more out of emotion/frustration imo. Not to mention that Malone is simply a much better WR and athlete with greater NFL prospects than North.

The problem with Malone (from a draft perspective) is UT's WR reputation for having well-coached/polished receivers no longer exists. This wasn't just a CZA issue (Justin Hunter, Darick Rogers, Cordarelle from the prior regime). He's probably a late Day2 talent that will fall due to his coaching.

I agree with you on Dobbs; however, guys such as Trevor Siemien, Jacoby Driskett, and J. Driskell have all been drafted in the past 2 years. I think teams will see the success that Dak/R. Wilson/Tyrod Taylor has had and think they can do the same thing with Dobbs.

Maybe he saw who was going to be throwing to him next season and thought it could further hurt his stock.

Just heard Alvin with the press at the combine. So affable. High character kid with that type of elite talent. Somebody's gonna get themselves an outstanding new member of their organization. Can't wait to watch him play again.

Brook's mock draft has Barnett going 8th to Carolina. It was on the ticker of the NFL Network. DB was the only Vol listed 1st Rd. I made the mistake on a commercial to channel surf, now I'm watching Paw Patrol.

Go Vols!

I personally think both Barnett & Kamara go in the 1st round. Some of the others are questionable as to which round they will go or even drafted at all except for Sutton.
