VOLS Article: CPF Media Day Comments

“A lot of teams will take their defensive front and fill a gap and hold the offensive lineman and let the linebackers run and make all the plays. If that’s what we need to get down to doing, we’ll do that. But that hasn’t been our style here, and I expect those guys to make more plays.
now, i know i've made reference to this in the past, and this is the kind of thing coming out of CPF's mouth that just irks me to no end.

IF? jeez. what we are doing isn't working.......but let's keep doing it hoping that it changes.........magically.......
the apparent inability to evalute the talent, and adjust our scheme or game plan accordingly. we do what we do, because that's what we do......regardless.

it just really is frustrating to read that after seeing what we've been unable to do doing it the way we've always done it.

i just dont' know what it will take for this staff to make adjustments to their line of thinking.

i just don't get it, and it's comments like that, mentality like that, that will always have people questioning his ability as a head coach, and rightfully so.

I can't stand this no huddle Petyon Manning wannabe Indy Colt's offense...When UT was successful, we were known as Wide Receiver U because we huddled up and would take shots downfield....I for one, wish they would throw the West Coast playbook out the window, because this is East TN afterall....Huddle up, stretch the field and give em the "up the middle in a cloud of dust"

The BIGGEST reason the Colts are so successful is they have the Wide Receivers (Harrison, Wayne, Morehead, etc.)and Quarterback that make the long ball a real threat...they have shown it in the pass.

If you watch the Colts and look at their stats the guy on the team with the most receptions and yardage is Dallas Clark...the Tight End / Slot Receiver...and just when the defense gets used to the short, slot ball and run...POW...Manning to Harrison...TOUCHDOWN

I just don't think Tennessee possesses the long ball threat combination of QB and WR...or if they do, they darn sure don't show it...

I posted the following observation last Monday (the quote above confirms everything):

Everything mentioned here goes back to bad coaching. Coaching is first of all evaluation and teaching. If you do not have the talent, you do not teach stunts, you teach the basics, e.g., gap assignment, technique, and tackling. In the ‘Bama game, I saw the right defensive end run into the B gap and turn his body (and legs) perpendicular to the line of scrimmage. The O guard bumped him and he hit the ground. We had a LB that was supposed to cover the C gap on that side, but a receiver (in motion) destroyed him; this was a running play that went for about 15 yards through this open area.

My point is that if you don’t have talented players, teach the tackles and ends to use pad leverage, hit the offensive player hard off the snap, shed the block, and watch your gaps and penetrate if possible. This is not getting done. If players know the basics and can see the results of their efforts, the motivation takes care of itself. We do not need anymore of this "did the chicken come before the egg" crap. ‘Nuff said.

Defensively, we’ve made some strides during the course of the year. The biggest that we emphasized and worked on and the players responded to was getting takeaways. The four takeaways in the ballgame were the key to winning the game.

Translation:

If South Carolina hadn't turned the ball over four times, we would have been blown out. So our coaching staff is going to take credit for those turnovers. Why, we've been working like heck just this week on causing turnovers. The reason we've been working hard with our defense on getting takeaways is because we've given up trying to get them to stop anybody.

“You can’t solve a problem on the same level that it was created. You have to rise above it to the next level.”– Albert Einstein

These are on my office wall, they sum up a lot of my frustration this year.

except that Bush has to consider a broad range of ramifications and fight the weight of tremendous inertia to make change.
