Stats don't lie: Tennessee is truly a second-half team

When looking at Tennessee’s season up to this point, it’s truly a tale of two halves.

+35 in the 4th Quarter...

No one finishes stronger than @Vol_Football.

The Vols rank dead-last in the SEC when it comes to scoring margin in the first quarter. Things don’t get much better in the second quarter, either — as UT registers with a scoring margin also ranked near the bottom of the conference.

The second half is a completely different story. Tennessee owns the fourth quarters — outscoring opponents by a combined 35 points. There may be several theories for this statistical breakdown.

For one, the team just might be one with a propensity to start slowly. There have been teams in the past that simply don’t perform well early in contests. A second theory could emanate from the coaching staff.

After halftime, the Volunteers seem to turn it on. The staff truly might’ve found a magical recipe for this boost in performance — from either a motivation standpoint, or simply one rooted in making the requisite adjustments.

This is true as it always has been. Since I was a child I saw it, and nothing has changed to this day.

It's the opposite of last season. I'm liking it better.

I'm with you! I'd rather finish strong rather than flame out in the 4th qtr like last year!! This is going to be a SPECIAL year for our beloved Vols.

I hate UGA and KNOW we will beat them like a rented mule on Saturday. :salute:

Who ever plays the Vols is going to have to knock them down and step on their throats to knock them out. I like fight I have seen from this team.

I may be wrong but I really don't think the Vols have much to worry about.

Its crazy to think how much better the Vols get as the game goes on. If this keeps up Tennessee can def be a championship team.

and Tennessee hasn't even put a complete game together. If we can find the VT Team and blend it with the second half of Fl Defense great things could happen for team 120

If only we had this determination last year... We could be looking at back to back trips to the Playoff. Oh well, this year will do.

I really believe that now that we have won against Florida, we will play a complete 60 minutes from here out. Not saying we will go undefeated,
but we will play much better from start to finish.

I hope your right. I'd love to see a complete game from them.

That's hilarious. I took the same picture and was going to post it. We have done a complete 180 from last year.

I think that's a testament to CBJ to not only be able to fix the parts of a team that are weak, but to turn that weakest part into our greatest strength...if true, we should play complete games next year and be unstoppable.

I think the kids are just coming out tight in the first half. They loosen up and fix it not a team on our schedule wants to play us.

I wouldn't doubt that Butch would like to see more points scored in the first half, you know, to lower the risk of heart attacks...not him...us...:)

GO VOLS!

This!!!

Would like to see a score for score type deal and then run away in the second half. Would keep me from throwing my hat across the room and my grand kids could set with me.

My theory is there was so much emphasis on finishing in the off season we lost focus on starting games. Last year we started fast but could not finish. Now we have the opposite problem but I prefer this over last season. If we could just find a good balance and play an entire game like we did in the 2nd half against FLA, we could be scary good.
