Vols are on their way down

Well for one...our secondary won't need the help v Arkansas that it did vs Cal. The scheme was created to stop the pass...or at least try and slow it down. Unfortunately we gave up some bigger runs in the process. Arkansas will get theirs, but I think we'll at least be able to make em work for it since they have no receiving threats anywhere near the quality of Cal.

Arkansas ran the ball every play in the second half vs Auburn last year... Something tells me they don't care if they can throw or not.

My bad, I forgot that giving up 45 points is supposed to put me in a positive mood about UT football.

It sux...it really does, but having as much inexperience as we do in the secondary and WR corps, I think we did pretty well after traveling cross country against a top 10 talent team. Hopefully they learn from it, move on and grow up. Being realistic, we weren't winning the NC anyways so this L, as much as it sux, isn't the worst thing that could happen to us. We didn't lose an SEC game. We don't face LSU or Auburn. We have UGA and Ark at home and another week to try and get the kinks out before Florida.

lol...agreed. Hopefully the home crowd will make a difference for us this year...and a lot of growing up...and a healthy QB.

Ah, the Fulmerites and their naive optimism defending yet another loss to a ranked team. Yes, it must be Fall again.
Even with another coach I think the game turns out the same. Not a Fulmerite by any means, just a volfan. Still a long season and I am going to try and enjoy it.

I am by no means a Fulmerite. If dude needs to go than he needs to go. I try to be a realist...(and as a realist I will tell you that I was personally more concerned w/ Cal than I am w/ Florida coming into this season). I'm a firm believer in being careful what ya wish for. Dude does land some major recruits and did get the VolNation a ring. If he is sent packing, then there better be a BETTER replacement.

Cal had a pretty darn good season last year after being abused by UT. We showed up much better than they did in 06. We don't screw up a blitz protection or have a brain fart by punting to the best return man in the nation, and that game goes to the wire.

What if McFadden gets hurt? then what? How about your over/under on the chances Appy state beats UM before the game. I am sure you picked that one. The game is unpredictable. So blow your steam and put on your colors for Saturday. If you can't do that then the WNBA finals are on this weekend.

Without a VERTICAL passing attack, we are screwed. Austin, Briscoe, and Taylor did a great job. However, they are merely possession receivers. The dink and dunk shi-it gets old. The corners and safeties cheat up, and then you are history. Note to Cutcliffe/Fulmer, get Vinson, O'Neal, and Gerald some playing time and utilize what they can do. We need speed and to stretch the damn field!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more gripe while I'm at it. With this "refocused" running game, why do you try some slip pass on 4th and goal??? It worked great the first 129 times we did it, but teams are onto us now. You line up on 4th and goal at the 2, tell your O-line that we are going to blow Cal off the focking ball, and smash them right in the mouth.

Let us only hope and pray we aren't overlooking S. Miss for the Gators, or loss #2 will be in 6 days.

You are exactly right voldaddy. If you can't go vertical on teams you are in bad trouble. The short passing game was one of the few things that was good last night, but think about it. Late in the game Cal just started basically playing Cover 2 and let the LB's and DE's help out with all the underneath stuff. Teams will load the box again and beg TN to beat them deep. That's exactly what happened a few years ago and that led to 5-6. I just have to agree that our program is on the decline and honestly has been for the past 5 or 6 years.

McFadden gets 200 yards against Chavis's Chumps -

Im taking the over.

"Chavis Chumps"? If you are truly a Vol - then I am embarrased for you. No, check that I pity you.

You know the play that got me? The one where Lucas was QB. By running that play, we told the Cal defense exactly where we were going to run it. Ainge lined up at receiver on the left. They knew we weren't going to make Ainge do any substantial blocking with his broken finger or try to catch the ball.

Another coach would've had the kicking game much improved. I am sick of this being UT's weak spot!

you're dang right about some speed. we've got some of it, use it? i was ripping about that all night.. everytime the dang camera panned over our sideline i saw all those speedy freshman sitting there.

and the slip pass was terrible.. on a play like that, there has to be another flat route because if the one out of the backfield is covered (and it was), then we are screwed

Guys....I would be willing to bet that we don't face a better offense than we did against Cal....Also, we didn't help ourselves by spotting them two touchdowns during the game....I appreciate the Cal Fan's comment about not giving up....We have a good team and it will get better....Maybe we are not SEC Championship Quality....YET.....but we will be by the time this season is done....Keep the faith.....

Yeah our recruiting has really fallen off over the past few years. We are really on a decline. Give me a break. It is one game and we have no idea about the season. Turn off the TV and go root for Michigan.

oh yeah we have really had some great talent lately. maybe you should TURN ON the TV and stop buying all the hype

Or they could just schedule cupcakes to start the season to "work the kinks out" like some teams do. That way we at least have a false sense of hope by evidence of beating up on chumps before we get let down. :D

That's what the end of UT's schedule accomplishes. We beat up on Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Memphis, etc. and all the Fulmerites talk about how the team has gelled and we're a great team, and then we receive a beatdown in the bowl game from a mid-tier ACC or Big 10 team.

:eek:lol:It accomplished neither. The only things that prevented Cal from posting over 400 yards passing on our defense were as follows:

1) They had 2 fewer possessions due to the fact that they put 14 points on the scoreboard without ever having to take an offensive snap, and

2) They were having such a field day running the ball for 6.2 yards per carry that they had no need to throw the ball.

You follow up a statement that you're not a Fulmerite with that quote? :eek:lol:

Well all I have to say is that the Vols is on their way down. I am not basing this on the loss tonight and if you think different then I think you are kidding yourself like I have been. After this mediocre year the recruits will fall off even more and the other sec teams that are on the rise will start getting more and more of them. It is just a cycle and it happens to every big team. We started to climb up, we peaked, and now the steady decline.
:no:I disagree bro. We will be fine.

Ok sparky...tell me what was untrue about what I said. You can call me a Fulmerite if you'd like. That's fine. You want him gone and the geniuses in State College are calling for JoePa's head. Some people seem to forget what the programs were looking like PRIOR TO THE CURRENT REGIME. Penn State was NOTHING prior to JoePa and UT was going nowhere prior to Fulmer. But we should hate him. He only got UT their 1st NATIONAL TITLE in @ 40 some years.

If someone is better that Phil, then I'm all for it, but until you can guarantee that we land someone who can land out of state talent like Phil, then pardon me if I actually demonstrate some loyalty to the guy who is responsible for me being able to rock my UT Natl Championship T shirt each year as the leaves change colors.

The title of this thread is "Vols on their way down". I ask you...Who put them up so high if the fall is so far?

That being said, we lost by 2 TDs. We gave up a bonehead punt return for a TD and a fumble bounced right into the hands of a defender already running towards the endzone. Crap happens. It does not signify the end of the program. When Cal ends up 11-1 or 10-2 we're gonna look back and realize this wasn't THAT bad.

Agree. After we kept doing that thing for a few plays, they figured out how to defend it. No running play, no vertical pass, every DC has an IQ over 70 knows how to defend those short dumps.
