I'll never have faith in it. Teams with good guards take away one huge tenet of our game, a la Texas. I'd rather play up tempo at every opportunity, but have the ability to crank it down in the half court D if needed.

Agreed, I think. Good half court D and an up-tempo offense aren't in conflict. We can and should have both.

One thing I think we've learned from Xavier and Gonzaga is that playing their PG full-court on D helps our half-court offense. We neutralized Pargo and Lavender by doing this. It takes the opponents longer to set up their half-court offense and shortens the time that we have to play intense man-to-man halfcourt D.

me too. it's fun to watch and we can score in bunches, but there's always a couple/three stretches in a game where we seem to do nothing, and it makes us vulnerable for teams to make runs on us as well, which they have/will.
On quick shots - Jake, I see what you're saying, but quick shots aren't necessarily bad shots. Lofton or JuJuan wide open for a set 3 is a great shot, whether it's with 8 seconds on the shot clock or 32. An off-balance 3 from 26 ft. with a hand in the face is a bad shot, especially if we still had plenty of time to work for a better one.

We're going to take some ill-advised shots throughout the course of a game, but the system (which I think is right for this team) believes in trying to get a good shot as early as you can through transition and pushing the ball up the court. We're not stronger or taller than our opponents, but we are quicker and more athletic and deeper than most, and I believe our guys can beat their men down the court enough times to get plenty of good shots throughout the course of a game.
i don't disagree, and i understand that's the system we play. and i don't hate it, but i can see why people, including myself, can see where in a one game situation we can get beat as a result of it.

the thing that concerns me the most come tourney time, whether it's the 1st round or final four, is if we get matched up against a team with really good guards and any kind of inside game.

if we don't make shots, don't get a chance to press than we give up too many opportunities at the boards on both ends to win games like that. as good as we are offensively in transition, we are equally as bad on D in transition.

someone said it earlier or in another thread, but if our shooting % was better, our assists and def. stats would be better. Everything we do is derived from what we do on the offensive side of the court. so far that's worked out.

i'm not saying we should change it, i'm just saying when we get matchd up with a team that can challenge us inside and doesn't turn the ball over, we shouldn't be surprised at the result.

Good post. As Pearl said when he first arrived here, put it up before you give it up, or something like that. This, of course, only works if you have good perimeter shooting. We all know when Lofton is capable of. JaJuan runs hot and cold, but he's certainly an above-average shooter, overall.

I still think we're taking too many 3's and not trying to work inside enough, although this has been better in the last 2-3 games. This is where Chism has to step up and be willing to take the feed in the paint and go up strong and draw contact. (of course, Chism at the charity stripe is quite an adventure in itself.)

I have not seen them play but I would imagine that VMI must play the same style we play.

So true. I feel like football is much easier to predict b/c size and speed are such huge factors. In basketball, one or two guys can get hot - or one or two key players can get cold - and change the entire dynamic of a game. And even though it's a round ball, sometimes it bounces one team's way.

and the short 3 point line just changes the game that dramatically
