3 per game? Really? Man it seems like 22 per game!Hubbs shared some very interesting info on the VQ podcast. He said on the season, on offense, TN has had 22 3 and outs. We have played 7 games. That’s an average of a little over 3 per game.
Now for the defense. To date, the defense has only forced a total of 11 3 and outs. 6 of those came in the first 2 games. So that means in 5 games our defense has forced, 1 3 and out per game. Let’s not forget that UK was a completely 1 dimensional offense.
So can someone please explain how the defensive struggles are all because of the offense? Because the data isn’t showing that at all.
Defenses has had its lapses and has been far from spectacular, but we've still held most of our opponents below their season averages on offense.
Even Bama, which we gave up 41 defensive points on, has scored more on virtually every other opponent this season. Kentucky gave up 63 to them, Ole Miss 63, Georgia gave up 41, as well.
Or how about Auburn? We gave up 23 point to them. Their other opponents: Kentucky 29, Arkansas 30, South Carolina 22, Georgia 6, Ole Miss 35, LSU 41. Average = 27.2.
We're not elite on defense, but we've been slightly above average against SEC competition. Offense, on the other hand, has been atrociously bad. Indeed, offense's terrible stats have made the defense look even worse than they really are.

Yeah, this. There isn't a single redeeming quality about this team. Not one place to point to and say, "THIS gives me hope". Eric Gray is the closest thing. Our inability to get off the field defensively on 3rd down has been a problem all year. When you think about it... we’ve lost 5 in a row but had double digit leads in 2 games and a halftime lead in another one. It’s taken a team effort be this bad.
100%. Besides the obvious downside of a pick 6, most all of the pick 6's have taken the score from a "one score" or manageable situation, to putting us out of our game plan...entirely taking the air out of the room on any momentum to win the game. Can't underestimate the "here we go again" mindset they have to have b/c of no confidence in offense holding up their end of the bargain.Nobody is blaming everything on the defense.
Yes and many of the issues for the defense still compound when our offenses starts throwing pick 6's, fumbles and multiple three and outs because it strips the whole team of momentum and hands over the momentum to the other team.
When your offense cannot stay on the field it wears out the defense.
If you'll notice.
Our defense didn't give up a single point in the first half against KY and Arkansas and was respectable against Auburn.
The defense isn't great, but if you have a catastrophe at QB that hands points on a silver platter to the other team and have to do everything then you might struggle a little more than you normally would.
What’s wild is the defense has given up less than 30 points in 5 games.. In modern college football, if we had just a normal offense we’d probably have 2 more wins.

Serious question. Are you friends with JG? Or do you know him personally in some capacity? We have given up an average of 3 3 and outs on offense. It’s not like every game the offense goes 3 and out many times. It’s just not the case. Point is the whole team hadn’t really been good. It’s not just the QB.
Based on the data, the eye test, and the end results, Tennessee is not very good at any facet of the game. There’s a couple bright spots (Eric Gray & the occasional big catch by a receiver), but for the most part, Tennessee doesn’t have a team strength.
