Change is good, I know.
But the things that stay the same, the things that happen again and again, year after year, these things have a subtle beauty that I revel in...
The easy laughter and carefree conversation of fifteen or so friends who have cooked steaks and drank beers on the same lakeside deck for more years than most of you have been alive...
The fact that a Budweiser always tastes the same..
The Easter Sunday discomfort of a six year old boy struggling to survive until he can climb out of his brand new suit. Or a toddler who just discovered a brightly colored egg beneath a tuft of grass. Two sights that always make me smile...
The fact that I know right now what Thanksgiving dinner will taste like. And the turkey sadwich the next day..
These, and so many other repititions in life, are as comforting to me as the sound of a grandfather clock on a rainy evening.
If you are fond of orange and white there is another repitition you cherish. It even has a name.
Football Time In Tennessee.
A lifetime of unbelievably good memories encapsulated in four simple words.
It starts again this week. I love my life.
Some notes from the ink stained wretches...

TNsean:Fulmer/Vols Ready
"I am ready for it, and I think the players are darn sure ready for it," Coach Phillip Fulmer said. "You get 23 practices and hitting each other and going through all that, and grading film and everything. I think everybody is ready to play a football game. I like the way this team has responded to what we've asked them to do."
"We're not totally there yet, by any stretch of the imagination, with everybody that can help us," Fulmer said. "But there's enough guys on both sides of the ball, I think two-deep, who are fighters and tough guys and competitors."
Freshman Denarius Moore and junior Arian Foster are still expected to handle kickoff return duties, but Fulmer possibly will look at other options Saturday.
Vols Travelling Early...
After receiving a waiver from the NCAA, UT will leave on Thursday for California because of the long trip. Teams typically travel on Fridays for Saturday games. UT officials said players would not miss any class work.
GVX:Cross Country Haul
As Tennessees football team took the practice field on Monday, UT assistant equipment manager Max Parrott packed belts into a travel case.
Those belts and some 13,000 pounds of equipment begin their nearly 2,500-mile journey to Berkeley, Calif., this afternoon in advance of No. 15 Tennessees season-opener at 12th-ranked Cal on Saturday (TV: WATE, 8 p.m. EDT).
Two drivers, Charlie Harris and Butch Caldwell of BP Express, will take turns driving UTs 18-wheeler cross-country beginning at noon. Theyre scheduled to arrive sometime Thursday evening.
Yet, for UT equipment manager Roger Frazier, the only difference between packing up for this week and any other game is the distance that equipment will travel.
Moving is moving, whether youre moving across the street or across the country, Frazier says.
TFP:Colquitt Watch
Despite the NCAA's new rule moving kickoffs back 5 yards to the 30, a healthy Britton Colquitt still puts most of his kickoffs into the end zone.
Though it's not his best asset, he's also plenty capable of hitting field goals beyond 50 yards.
But with Tennessee's season opener at California just four days away, it's quite possible Colquitt's tweaked quadriceps muscle won't be 100 percent, and coach Phillip Fulmer is adamant about Colquitt's punting being the priority, if he had to pick one.
Fulmer said before practice that it was "too early" for Colquitt to kick.
"He is day-to-day," the coach said. "We think he's going to be fine. He probably could kick today if we wanted to risk pulling his quad again, but I don't think I want to do that. He should be fine."
